Welcome to the world of Dental Infection Control! During this course, we will delve into your role in the essential practices and protocols designed to maintain a safe environment in our dental offices. In dentistry, infection prevention is paramount to ensure the well-being of both patients and dental healthcare providers. Let’s explore fundamental principles of infection control, including sterilization, disinfection, and aseptic techniques, as well as the latest advancements in technology and guidelines that you can take into your practice the next day. Participants will gain a thorough understanding of the importance of infection control in dental practice, equipping them with the knowledge and skills for the patient, the clinician, and the operatory.

Learning Objectives:

1. Understand “chain of infection” and know strategies for prevention and control of pathogens.

2. Understand the responsibility and ethics of dental healthcare professionals to adhere to scientifically accepted principles and practices of infection control.

3. Explain the methods of hand hygiene, barrier protection and disinfection.

4. Utilize proper personal protective equipment and where appropriate to use them.

5. Understand and describe the proper use of infection control principles and practices for cleaning, disinfection, and sterilization in the dental office.

6. Review proper sharps safety protocols.

7. Understand the role and need of the Safety Compliance Officer in a dental setting.

Jessica Atkinson, MEd, BSDH, RDH, has been in the dental field for 23 years with experience as front office staff, dental assistant, Dental Hygienist and Dental Hygiene Education. Education is Jessica’s joy, from educating patients, students and anyone else who comes across Hygiene Edge’s YouTube channel. She speaks both nationally and internationally to continue educating, growing, and being inspired with her fellow dental professionals.  

Melia is a proud clinical dental hygienist in Utah. She loves learning, educating, and advocating for dental hygienists to grow in their profession and serve our local communities. She speaks nationally, and loves to write about teeth and create helpful dental videos. When she’s not talking about dentistry or how amazing RDHs are, she’s planning her next trip either out of the country or to a National Park or being a mom to her two daughter girl gang and goldendoodle pup.
