After this course the participant will be able to:

  • Discuss the evolution and development of the AAP Classification System
  • Differentiate between gingivitis and periodontitis as they are defined in the new classification system
  • Utilize the new AAP classification system as well as the staging and grading process to properly classify periodontal disease for their patients
  • Develop treatment plans and home-care regimens using the staging and grading system
  • Explain how the stage and grade for a patient may change for a patient over time and how clinical findings and patient history may affect a patients staging and grading.

Dr. Julius N. Manz is currently the Director of the Dental Hygiene Program at San Juan College. He is a native New Mexican, having been born and raised there after his parents emigrated to the United States from Germany.   He attended the University of New Mexico obtaining his Bachelor’s degree in Physics and Mathematics.  After college he spent the next 10 years as a Naval Submarine Officer and Nuclear Engineer.  After resigning his commission in the United States Navy as a Lieutenant Commander, he attended dental school at the University of Colorado.  Dr. Manz practices general dentistry in Farmington, NM is a Professor and the Director of the San Juan College Dental Hygiene Program.  He is a past president of the New Mexico Dental Association and currently serves as a delegate to the American Dental Associations House of Delegates.   He extensively writes and lectures on dental related matters.

He has two boys Noah and Josiah and is married to the most wonderful woman in the world, Jean.  He loves hiking and camping and working on his Toyota Landcruiser during his spare time.
