The concept of “motivational interviewing,” - now recognized in oral healthcare as becoming the best practice in “guiding” our patients in making positive changes in their health and lifestyle behaviors. By eliminating those prior tactics of judging or controlling our patients, we are now embracing a more effective “patient-centered approach to coaching.
Our patients will only make positive changes if they can find the value of the change as well as making choices on their own.
During this program, the speaker will walk through the key principles that underscore the process of using motivational interviewing techniques in our workplace. Several video demonstrations will point out deliberate corrections in a one-on-one dialog between healthcare provider and their patient.
Learning Objectives: At completion of program, the participant will be able to:
  •          Discuss and apply the four guiding principles that underscore “motivational interviewing.”
  •          Discuss the stages in motivational interviewing using the concepts of D.A.R.N.
  •          Recognizing and applying “open-ended” questioning skills to develop a deeper process of dialog and learning more about patient’s values and behaviors.
  •           Define ambivalence and how we can coach our patients to recognize the obstacles that prevent them from making sound behavior changes.
  •          Observe the video demonstrations during patient interactions to make future corrections in our conversations.
