Controlled Substances and Utah Dentists - Approved Procedures for Prescribing and Monitoring While Safely and Effectively Managing Pain and Anxiety


Overview
This program is designed to help Utah dentists meet their continuing education requirements for prescribing controlled substances. The course provides and up date on the current scope of the opioid epidemic in Utah and the nation and its impact on pain management in dentistry, and a review of the clinical pharmacologic traits of opioid analgesics and those of on-opioid alternatives for the management of acute dental pain. Additionally, the essential elements of the FDA Blueprint for Prescriber Education, patient record documentation for controlled substances, and useful policies, procedures, and implementation strategies to minimize the risk of opioid and controlled substances abuse and diversion are covered. 

Learning objectives
In this course you will:

- Update knowledge of the scope of the crisis in controlled substances in Utah and the nation
- Review laws and regulations pertinent to Utah controlled substance prescribers
- Understand the FDA Blueprint for Prescriber Education (07/09/2012)
- Review the availability of national and Utah-specific resources to assist in controlled
  substance and opioid prescribing
- Understand patient record documentation for controlled substance and opioid prescribing
- Understand office policies, procedures and implementation of procedures regarding opioid
  prescribing
- Review the current status of medical cannabis from an evidence-based perspective


  

Arthur H. Jeske, D.M.D., Ph.D.

Dr. Jeske is Professor, Department of General Practice and Dental Public Health and 

Associate Dean for Strategic Planning & Continuing Dental Education, University of Texas School of Dentistry at Houston.  He earned his Ph.D. degree (pharmacology) and his D.M.D. degree at the Medical College of Georgia.  Dr. Jeske is Editor of Contemporary Dental Pharmacology:  Evidence-Based Considerations (Springer Publishing, Berlin), Editor-in-Chief of Mosby’s Dental Drug Reference and Section Editor (Pharmacology) of the Journal of Craniomandibular and Sleep Practice.  He has served on the American Dental Association’s Council on Scientific Affairs and served as an Evidence Reviewer for the American Dental Association’s Center for Evidence-Based Dentistry.  He is a Fellow of the International College of Dentists, the American College of Dentists, the Academy of Dentistry International and the Pierre Fauchard Academy.  Dr. Jeske holds memberships in the ADA, TDA and GHDS, as well as Omicron Kappa Upsilon and Delta Sigma Delta, and he is recipient of the Distinguished Alumnus Award from the Medical College of Georgia School of Dentistry.   Dr. Jeske has been in the private practice of general dentistry for 40 years.




This course has been approved by the State of Utah Department of Commerce Division of Occupational and Professional Licensing and meets the requirements for Controlled Substance Prescribers per Chapter 37 of the Utah Controlled Substance Act. (Effective December 9, 2021)
