Dental patients may present with complex medications they are taking for management of their acute and chronic illnesses. These medications may induce oral and systemic adverse effects, drug interactions and altered reactivity to drugs provided during dental care.
This course will provide an overview of the dental implications of medications, supplements and substances of abuse most frequently used by dental patients. It will provide practical tools dental professionals can apply every day to assist them in interpreting the information contained in a patient’s medication history and help the learner understand the impact on dental treatment planning and patient care.

Objectives:

·         Discuss medications, supplements and substances of abuse most frequently encountered on a patient’s medical history and their impact on dental therapy.

·         Describe medication-induced and systemic illness-induced oral effects in the dental patient.

·         Explore innovative treatment options available with injectable and topical drugs for managing pain in medically complex patients.

·         Describe the pharmacology and mechanism of action of common drugs taken by the dental patient.

·         Understand appropriate prescribing practices to utilize in everyday clinical situations.
