seriously: A roadmap for improving oral health in the United States” is an

the insights of extensive research and expert interviews, the report
focuses on the prevalence of gum (gum) disease, its risk factors and impact,
definitions of best practices to prevent gum disease, and steps to improve

Learning Objectives
After participating in this course
participants will better understand their role as a provider in improving oral
health outcomes as well as the 5 key aims of the study:

risk factors, its impact and the existing care pathway
• Build the economic case for the prevention
of gum disease
• Review current oral health-related policies
in the US
• Recognize best practices
• Identify the steps to create an enabling
environment associated with gum health and develop a roadmap
AJ Acierno, DDS
Dr. Alan J. Acierno is a practicing dentist,
CEO of DecisionOne Dental Partners, and President Clinical Operations and COO
Midwest Division of Smile Brands. After receiving his D.D.S. from Creighton
University, he practiced dentistry in both corporate and private environments,
where he discovered the benefits and challenges of each practice. Compelled
with a vision to make a difference in the way dentistry is practiced, Dr. A.J.,
together with his brother and fellow dentist, Dr. Michael Acierno, founded
DecisionOne Dental Partners in 2011. In 2018 DecisionOne partnered with
Smile Brands to continue their mission of changing the way dentistry is done to
improve lives with the backing of best-in-class partner. In 2021 Dr.
Acierno stepped into his role as COO of Smile Brands, overseeing the Midwest
division. In his free time, Dr. Acierno enjoys spending time with his family
and visiting Walt Disney World.
Robert Crim, DDS
Dr. Robert Crim earned both his
undergraduate degree and his dental degree from Marquette University in
Milwaukee, Wisconsin. After college, he moved to Florida and practiced
dentistry in the Tampa/St. Petersburg area for over 30 years, including more
than 10 years as a Smile Brands-affiliated dentist. Previously he owned two
private dental practices in Florida. Prior to his appointment as Chief Dental
Officer in May 2014, Dr. Crim practiced at several Bright Now!® Dental offices in the greater Tampa area and also
was the Market Dental Director and Professional Corporation Owner for all Smile
Brands affiliated dental groups in Florida.
He has been recognized for staff development and received the
Dentist of the Year Award for the East area in 2011. Dr. Crim has done mission
work throughout his career, in the Congo, the Cook Islands, Haiti and South
Korea. In 2012 he was a member of a team of Smile Brands affiliated providers
that traveled to West African nation of Ghana to provide free dental care to
people in need at orphanages and community centers.
Tammy Filipiak RDH, MS
A dental hygienist with 35 years of experience
within general and specialty practice, as well as educational and management
settings, Filipiak has been in a DSO Clinical Leadership role for the past 19
years. She is a strategic partner within the organization supporting
execution of organizational initiatives. A member of the American
Dental Hygienists Association (ADHA) since 1986, she served as President in
2017-18 and as the Chair of the ADHA Institute for Oral Health in 2018-19.
She has been recognized for her leadership with numerous awards, serves on a
number of corporate advisory boards as a key opinion leader, on the advisory
board for a dental hygiene education program in WI, and served on the Board of
Directors for North Central WI Area Health Education Centers. She has
written/presented numerous articles and continuing education courses
throughout her career. In addition to her Associate Degree in Dental
Hygiene, she has a Bachelor’s Degree in Business, and a Master’s Degree in
Organizational Leadership and Quality.
