Myofunctional Issues across the Lifespan

Many dental hygienists see patients in their chairs with a variety of issues that can make appointments challenging.  Those patients with lower lip tension and gagging problems may have an oral myofunctional disorder.  In this course, dental hygienists will be able to recognize the specific issues they observe during appointments and link them back to these oral myofunctional disorders.  Case studies of children and adults will be shared to illustrate how myofunctional therapy has helped improve oral development, assist in overall better health, and make dental appointments easier.  Additionally, we will review how these myofunctional disorders begin in infants and children. These issues can begin in infancy and worsen as they grow and compensate into adulthood.  Dental hygienists can play a large part in educating parents about these disorders.  In doing this, parents can be more aware of how to help their children have optimal oral growth and development as well as overall systemic health.

Dental Hygiene attendees will be able to:

Understand the signs and symptoms of oral myofunctional disorders in patients.

Evaluate patients during hygiene appointments for oral myofunctional disorders.

Educate parents about oral myofunctional issues in their children.

Recognize how early intervention can help prevent myofunctional disorders.
