Course Description:
Ethical Compass is a comprehensive 2-hour continuing education course designed for the oral health professional seeking to enhance their understanding of ethical principles in dental practice. This course offers a review of fundamental ethical concepts, decision-making frameworks, and real-world applications. Participants will explore common ethical dilemmas encountered in dental offices, gaining valuable insights and practical tools to navigate complex situations with confidence and integrity. Through interactive case studies, attendees will sharpen their ethical reasoning skills, ensuring they can uphold the highest standards of patient care and professional conduct in their daily practice.
Course Learning Objectives:
Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to:
1. Articulate key ethical principles and values relevant to dental practice, including autonomy, beneficence, non-maleficence, and justice.
2. Apply a structured ethical decision-making framework to analyze and resolve complex ethical dilemmas encountered in dental settings.
3. Evaluate real-world case studies to identify ethical issues, propose solutions, and justify ethical choices based on professional standards and best practices in dental care.
Brenda Armstrong, Department Chair and Associate Professor at Utah Tech University (UT) has been dedicated to student success in the Department of Dental Hygiene since 2013. Prior to UT she helped in the successful launch and accreditation of the Dental Hygiene Department at Thomas Nelson Community College (Williamsburg, VA), where she served as assistant professor and clinic coordinator.
Throughout her distinguished career in higher education, Brenda has focused on empowering students to become ethical, decision-making professionals. Her passion for teaching extends beyond ethics and law to encompass the holistic development of dental hygiene practitioners.
Brenda holds a Master\'s degree in Dental Hygiene from the University of Minnesota, Minneapolis, and a BSDH from Weber State University, Ogden, UT. Her commitment to the field is evident through her service as chair of the Utah Oral Health Coalition (2018-2019) and Utah Dental Hygienists\' Association (UDHA) as president (2023-2024).
