Course 1: The Opioid Epidemic and Opioid Alternatives for Pain Control
Description: The Opioid Epidemic now claims over 100,000 lives per year in the United States and there is no indication that the upward trajectory of overdose deaths will abate in the foreseeable future. Health care professionals, including dentists, dental hygienists and dental assistant, should understand the evolving pattern of illicit drug use in the U.S., as well as the types of drugs being diverted and abuse, to provide safe dental treatment to patients who may be affected by Substance Use Disorder (SUD). This program updates dental professionals on the current status of the Opioid Epidemic, its implications for patient management, and reviews non-addictive drugs that can be used in place of opioids for dental pain management.
Course Objectives:
1. Review current CDC data on patterns of illicit drug use and their impact on
dentistry;
2. Using scientific evidence, select drugs that can be used to manage acute dental
pain with efficacy equal or superior to that of opioid analgesics; and
3. Review laws and governmental policies related to the opioid epidemic that
impact the dental profession.

DEA Course 2: Safe and Effective Prescription of Opioids for Dental Pain and Prevention of Abuse and Diversion
Description: Dentists and physicians are prescribing fewer opioids than in the past, due largely to factors emanating from the Opioid Epidemic, including greater regulatory/governmental oversight of opioid prescribing. However, for select cases in which non-opioids cannot be used to control acute postoperative pain,
dental professionals can safely use opioids for dental pain management using scientific evidence to achieve maximum efficacy, while limiting doses prescribed.
This program reviews the pharmacology of opioid analgesics, and the specific agents supported by evidence from systematic reviews. Included in this presentation are recognition of patient characteristics to prevent abuse and diversion, as well as ethical considerations and standards of care that must be considered when prescribing opioids.
Course Objectives:
Use scientific evidence to select opioid analgesics for the management of acute postoperative pain in a manner that minimizes opioid exposure and maximizes pain control;
Recognize characteristics of patients that can indicate potential abuse and diversion of controlled substances; and
Review laws and governmental policies related to the prescription of opioids and standards of care and ethical considerations related to the use of controlled substances in dentistry.
