However, it also poses some challenges and opportunities for dental hygienists, who need to be prepared for the AI revolution. This course will provide an overview of AI and its applications in dental hygiene and dentistry, and discuss the benefits and limitations of AI for improving diagnosis, treatment planning, patient communication, and access to care. The course will also explore the ethical, legal, and social implications of AI for dental hygienists and their patients and will identify the skills and competencies that dental hygienists need to adopt and integrate AI in their practice. It will include examples and resources of AI tools and software that dental hygienists can use in their daily practice. AI is transforming the way we approach oral hygiene, empowering us to take control of our oral health and that of our patients with personalized insights and guidance. Speaker: Maria Perno Goldie, RDH, MS, FADHA Former Professional Member, National Speakers Association; Past President, International Federation of Dental Hygienists and American Dental Hygienists’ Association Maria graduated from the University of Pennsylvania, School of Dental Hygiene & is the recipient of the 1999 University of Pennsylvania Dental Hygiene Alumni Achievement Award. She is also a 2003 winner of the Pfizer/ADHA Award for Excellence in Dental Hygiene and the 2011 Alfred C. Fones Award. She was awarded the first ever “2016 Distinction in Service Award” from the International Federation of Dental Hygienists in June, 2016 by President JoAnn Gurenlian, RDH, PhD, and a Presidential Citation in 2018 from ADHA President Tammy Filipiak. She earned her BA in Health Services Administration from Saint Mary’s College and a MS in Health Science from San Francisco State University. Maria is a graduate of the 2004-2006 fellowship of the California Health Care Foundation’s (CHCF) Health Care Leadership Program, administered by the Center for Health Professions at the University of California, San Francisco, a two-year program. She is a member of the American Academy of Dental Hygiene (AADH) and an Honorary Member of Sigma Phi Alpha, the National Dental Hygiene Honor Society. Maria has been visiting faculty at the University of Rome for the Interdisciplinary Master’s Degree Program in Advanced Technologies in the Sciences of Oral Hygiene, and at the University of Pisa. She is currently a member of The Oral Cancer Foundation Registered Dental Hygienist Advisory Board. As a noted researcher, author, and speaker, Maria has presented seminars nationally and internationally on topics such as Women’s Health and Wellness, Cancers and Oral Care for the Cancer Patient, Oral Cancer, Enamel Therapy, and Immunology and Periodontal Disease. She has appeared on several network television interviews regarding the link between periodontal disease and systemic disease, and appeared on the Fox Health Network/WEBMD.TV -- The "Cutting Edge Medical Report.” She has taken part in a number of radio interviews have been conducted across the country, to emphasize the importance of oral health as a foundation for systemic health and a beautiful smile. Overview: CE #2 - “Severe Mental Illness and Oral Health: Xylitol Can Help” Friday October 25, 2024 2.0 CEUs & Snacks Included Course Description: Severe mental illness is a life-altering disease that affects many people just as they are beginning to discover the freedoms of adulthood. Many among this population also confront a myriad of oral health issues including dry mouth (medication induced) that leads to tooth loss. Because of the illness itself, chaos and financial distress, affected individuals often do not seek oral health care services thereby developing new oral health problems and exacerbating existing disease. This course offers health professionals and caregivers an easy alternative to help the oral needs of their client. It is impossible to completely avoid sugar in our diets and to enforce adequate oral hygiene. A more realistic approach would be to consider incorporating a natural sweetener substitute, such as xylitol that aids in wetness, reduces dental decay and plaque formation into the daily lifestyle. The Five W’s of xylitol; the Who, What, When, Where, and Why will become clear upon completion of this one-three hour course. In addition, attendees will be able to offer a healthy tasty alternative for increasing wellness and total health for their clients. Course Objectives: Understand the predisposition, prevalence, and related pathophysiology of schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, and chronic depression as described in Standard Care. Recognize the risks, causes, signs, symptoms, and treatments for SMI. Understand the value of Functional Psychiatry and “Psychobiotics” Identify the oral manifestations of SMI. Become familiar with modified approaches for providing oral health care to patients with SMI. Mass fatality incidents, terrorist attacks, and wars have established the need for forensic dental identification teams. Both the American Society of Forensic Odontology and the American Board of Forensic Odontology recognize the valuable role dental hygienists play as part of forensic odontology teams and the identification process. The most important role a clinical dental hygienist can play in the forensic dental identification process occurs at a routine hygiene appointment, while the patient is alive--through dedication to accurate record keeping and maintaining diagnostic charting, intra-oral photos, and radiographs. The presentation is jam-packed with photos and featuring examples of "less than quality" documentation and radiographs. Learn the difficulties forensic dental teams face with private practice documentation that contributes to a delay in the identification process. The speaker will make recommendations about documentation of patient\'s oral conditions, lesions, and when radiographs should be retaken. Participate in mock-identifications by comparing antemortem and post-mortem radiographs. Refresh your clinical documentation skills that contribute to identification of post-mortem remains and leave inspired to maintain the highest standards of professional documentation. Couse methodology: This informative lecture-style presentation is designed to inspire clinical dental hygienists to maintain the highest standards when recording professional documentation. The PowerPoint presentation features many photographs of the speaker\'s forensic work with the military. The presentation is jam-packed with photos of forensic cases where she has consulted with a forensic dentist to produce a positive identification. In addition to featuring examples of "less than quality" documentation and radiographs, the speaker will make recommendations about documentation of patient\'s oral conditions, lesions, and when radiographs should be retaken. An interactive section accompanies the PowerPoint presentation where attendees are asked to compare antemortem and post-mortem radiographs in a mock-identification. There is a catastrophic shortage of dental hygienists. Wages have never been higher, yet RDH\'s continue to leave the field. Something is wrong. There has to be a better way. Consider the possibilities if we could reimagine a dental health care system. What could the role of a Primary Care Dental Therapist look like? Course Objectives: Participants will learn how they can be part of a dental industry movement that can: Rethink “dental hygiene” in a way that better serves patients, providers, and communities. Understand the challenges that keep us from working together and innovating. Increase the scope of RDH practice. Create career pathways that facilitate advancement and decrease burn-out. Verber, DMD, FICOI Dr. Michael Verber currently serves as the CEO & President of the Verber Dental Group, focusing on the implementation of high quality comprehensive dentistry into a large multi-location, multi-specialty group practice. His passion for dentistry and design is expressed through his work at the Verber Advanced Dental Institute where he focuses on complex cosmetic, implant, and TMJ cases while spending time teaching continuing education for dental professionals. Michael has committed himself to excellence in cosmetic dentistry and implantology, a passion of his since he began dental implant research in 1996 as a college undergraduate. He is known to combine creative solutions with systematic approaches in treatment planning for predictable results. His passion for dentistry comes from working within a team environment with a group of amazing colleagues.
