This course is certain to sell out Course Description: Oral side effects are the number one reason cancer patients cannot complete their treatment protocols. This course will focus on the treatment induced oral side effects for cancer patients undergoing systemic chemotherapy and/or head and neck radiation. These side effects can significantly compromise the patient's morbidity and their quality of life. This course information will enable you to identify the most common treatment related side effects due to both treatment modalities and will focus on the oral management of patients compromised by local and systemic cancer therapies. Now that the side effects have been identified, what is the plan of action? A thorough presentation on medication induced osteonecrosis will be included. Caring for the oral needs of cancer requires confidence, knowledge and compassion. This course will give you all three. Today every three minutes, someone is diagnosed with cancer. Is your office prepared to handle the dental needs of these patients? Oral complications resulting from anticancer therapies can significantly affect morbidity, the patient's tolerance of treatment and their quality of life. Involving the entire dental team in the management of the cancer patient has been a recommendation of the National Institutes of Health for over 38years. This course is designed to provide the information that will enable you to effectively give treatment to these medically compromised patients. She had a private practice in Greenville, Pennsylvania for 44 years. Dr. Calderbank was an associate instructor at the University of Pittsburgh School of Dental Medicine. She served for 13 years as a member of the Pennsylvania State Dental Board in addition to retiring as its first female chair. She is a chief examiner for the Commission on Dental Competency Assessment. Dr. Calderbank was recruited by the ENT Department to serve as the first dentist on the Head and Neck Cancer Survivorship team at the University of Pittsburgh. She is the Director of Patient Care Services at LECOM School of Dental Medicine, Erie Campus. Dr. Calderbank received the Pennsylvania Dental Association's Special Public Service Award in recognition of her commitment to raising awareness of the Oral Complications of Cancer Therapies. These range from Malpractice, OSHA, and HIPPA to disputes with The State Board, The IRS, and employees. This course is designed to prepare and educate the participants to face such challenges, how to avoid such events, as well as how to respond to such proceedings. Additionally, we will also discuss strategies to correct and prevail when facing legal action. As Benjamin Franklin once said, “An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.” Participants are encouraged to bring questions and submit them in advance. Course Objectives: · At the conclusion of this course the participant will recognize many of the legal challenges Dental Practitioners face daily and how to prepare for them · At the conclusion of this course the participant will recognize how to respond to these legal challenges. · At the conclusion of this course participants will also know how not to respond to such challenges. As stated, questions are welcomed for discussion. About the Speaker: Dr. George Just has more than 50 years of experience as a licensed dentist, and 35 years as a licensed attorney. He graduated Queens College (CUNY) in 1969 having received a full scholarship, and then completed his dental training at Case Western Reserve University in 1973. Upon graduation he was awarded the CV Mosby Award for Academic Excellence as well as a USAF scholarship. He then served two years as a Captain at Eglin Air Force Base at the end of the Vietnam Conflict. During those two years he acquired vast experience in general dentistry as well as Oral Surgery, Periodontics and Endodontics. Upon his discharge Dr. Just received his Endodontic training at NYU School of Dentistry and Peninsula Hospital Center. His research paper on “The Presence of Immunoglobulins in Bovine Pulps” was published in the Journal of Endodontics circa 1979. In 1988 Dr. Just graduated from Duquesne School of Law having been selected for Law Review. In addition to private practice Dr. Just has been a Diplomate of the Board of Forensic Examiners, past president of the Pittsburgh Endodontic Study Club, and current President of the East Suburban Dental Society. He has also held academic positions at the University of Pittsburgh School of Dentistry in the Endodontic Department. He currently serves as a preceptor at the Erie Campus of LECOM School of Dentistry and continues to work part time at his former practice. Since 1996 Dr. Just has lectured for Tulsa Dental, now called Dentsply Sirona, throughout the United States and Canada, in both the areas of Endodontics and Dental Malpractice. However, keeping up with current safety recommendations and regulations can be a daunting task. In this course, we will review OSHA’s Bloodborne Pathogens Standard, the CDC’s guidelines for Infection Control, the Hazard Communication Standard, and HIPAA Rules. Our focus will be on the responsibilities of Dental Health Care Professionals with the goal of helping the attendees identify areas in which they can take steps to improve the safety of their offices. About the Speaker: Autumn Bupp is a graduate of Grove City College and has worked in both health services and in education. As the former Director for the Muscular Dystrophy Association in Pittsburgh, Autumn worked to increase public awareness of the types of diseases classified as MD, while also working with local researchers and clinical directors to help improve the lives of those affected by MD. More recently, Autumn worked with the Beaver County Rehabilitation Center to teach the P.E.T.S. (Pre-Employment Transition Services) program to high school students with special needs. This program is aimed at training students from ages 14 through 21 with a variety of special needs to understand the communication and social skills necessary to transition into the workforce after high school.
