Educational Aims
Evidence based medicine has been described as a combination of good science and clinical experience. The absence of either can be detrimental in a dental sleep practice. It is imperative that clinicians understand the definitions, benefits, and shortcomings of each so they can properly evaluate patient outcomes, relevant literature, and provide optimal care. Synthesizing information through these two lenses will empower clinicians to critically assess information about parafunction, sleep disordered breathing, and any relationships between the two.

Expected Outcomes
Dental Sleep Practice subscribers can answer the CE questions to earn 2 hours of CE from reading the article. Correctly answering the questions will exhibit the reader will:
1. Differentiate between evidence-based medicine and empirical observation
2. Glean insights into the nature of any relationships between occlusion and TMD
3. Consider the relationships between sleep disordered breathing and bruxism
4. Refrain from assuming direct causation when evaluating contributing factors.
5. Properly evaluate methods utilized when considering validity of studies as opposed to simply accepting the author’s conclusions.
