Create Your Oral-Systemic Center of Excellence
3.00
Overview:
Create Your Oral-Systemic Center of Excellence
Evidence is making it increasingly clear that the health of the mouth directly affects the health of the whole body. Dental professionals need to be invited into the integrated medical model where we treat the person, not just the disease.
This program will ‘bridge the oral systemic gap’ to inspire dental teams about the value of structuring oral-systemic care into their practices; while inspiring collegial collaboration with other health professionals, and educating the community.Participants will learn the science behind the many oral-systemic links, including the biologic plausibility that the common root cause is“oral bacteremia”. They will understand that periodontal and endodontic infections in the mouth drive the same inflammatory reactions throughout the body as they do in the mouth.
To gain confidence when speaking to patients and health professional colleagues, participants will have the opportunity to learn medicine. Included will be an overview of several medical topics important to the oral systemic connections presented at a level dental professionals need to understand an pass onto their patients.
Objectives:
• Learn the science that inflammation is the root cause to most oral systemic connections.
• Understand medical topics that dental professionals will be presenting to the patients and discussing with colleagues.
• Learn how to present cases from the perspective of how your care will impact their overall health

COURSE DESCRIPTION:Updated
protocols assist us in determining our patient’s specific needs. As we move
towards a more collaborative profession, we need to embrace these updates to
identify those needs. We are presented with continuous challenges of new
advances in products and technology and their use in dentistry and are in need
information to determine when and how to add them into our armamentaria. As
professionals providing health services, our perception of product use along
with protocols needs to be discussed with our team as well as the interdisciplinary
referrals we have. The process of care (assessment, diagnosis, treatment
planning, implementation, evaluation and documentation) requires a
comprehension of protocols, products and treatment options and how they are to
be utilized.
This course will provide information for the clinicians to be able to:
▪ Modify diagnosis assistance with the team and
rationale for changes in assessment forms and
diagnostic tools
▪ Distinguish which new-to-market products should
be brought into your practice
▪ Integrate materials and products for a variety of
uses in the dental office from infection control, dental hygiene therapy, oral cancer
screening, patient communication and instrumentation
▪ Develop effective communication with patients and
assist in the business of the dental practice
▪ Formulate strategies that incorporate efficiency
in patient treatment for more productive scheduling

Developing Intellectually Empathetic Dental Providers: Utilizing a Critical Thinking Framework
3.00
Overview:
COURSE
DESCRIPTION:Empathy:the ability to understand and possibly share the feelings of
another.Our ultimate goal as educators
of future dental professionals is to guide students in becoming competent,
empathetic dental providers.However,
this is extremely hard to do when students come from certain, more privileged
backgrounds or lack exposure to certain groups of people within the
community.We have developed specific
interventional modules to target two particular groups within our community
that our students will encounter in their professional lives: victims of
interpersonal violence and the homeless community.Students have completed pre- and
post-surveys for these interventional modules.Preliminary results indicate a growth in intellectual humility and
empathy, two central critical thinking traits in the Paul-Elder Critical
Thinking Framework.This workshop
discusses empathy, gives a brief background in the Paul Elder Critical Thinking
Framework that our university has adopted, and how the framework shaped these
specific interventions that we developed for our students.
