Overview

The Rhode Island Dental Hygienists’ Association is pleased to present the 2017 RIDHA Annual Session, where you will engage in exciting courses, have great food, and will experience a beautiful meeting place at an affordable price. RIDHA Annual Session is a great way to explore other professional options, see old friends and network with new ones.

All RIDHA members will receive one free CEU for attending the Business Meeting on Friday from 2:30-3:00pm

Overview: Angie has been called, “The Oprah of Dental Hygiene” while presenting this course! As Angie teaches how to make decisions on product choices, she mentions items that have made a positive impact on her life as a hygienist. Attendees receive samples of many of the things Angie speaks about. It is not unusual to hear hygienists squeal with delight and cheer during the presentation, much like the Oprah’s audience members used to do during her “Favorite Things” show! Come feel Angie’s passion for improving the lives of hygienists everywhere as she teaches how to make “HyDuctions” and shares the HyDuctions she has made throughout her career. Course Objectives: 1. Recognize what dental professionals can do to assist their aging patients remain dentally healthy for their lifetime. 2. List various things that can be done to assist the clinician to practice ergonomically. 3. Understand new technologies available in dental hygiene instruments, interdental cleaning, prophy angles and hand pieces and other items. 4. Identify the role fluoride and xylitol play in the reduction of tooth decay. 5. Discuss opportunities that are available for hygienists outside of operatory walls. Overview: This course will discuss the care of individuals with developmental disabilities by the dental hygienist. Various disabilities will be reviewed, with their prevalence, common oral conditions and relevance to oral care. The effect on oral and overall health will be discussed. Behavioral guidance and other current techniques to assist the hygienist will be addressed. Overview: Substance abuse may have been a national concern but is now deemed a crisis/epidemic. A dental professional may find themselves interacting with people who abuse drugs such as tobacco products, alcohol, cocaine, heroin, marijuana, and methamphetamine and prescription medications. It is important for oral health professionals to be able to identify problems of abuse and to provide informed care or referral. Oral implications of chemical dependency and abuse need to be considered in all phases of the dental hygiene care plan. Course objectives: Identify patterns of dependency and abuse. Discriminate drugs of choice and identify impacts on the body and mind. Discuss various treatment options that patient’s may/ are engaged in. Identify oral signs of substance abuse and the chemicals within the drugs that cause hard or soft tissues changes. Discuss care plan modifications and strategies for a chemically dependent person.
