Periodontal Therapy in 2021, It takes a Village!
3.00
Overview:
Emerging from an unprecedented year in a global pandemic, the
challenges forced on the dental team has strengthened our resolve to adapt new
protocols going forward. As we forge through
this year, our management of disease transmission and oral disease prevention
will be tested as a result of what we have learned and need to learn applying the
revised periodontal classification system.
In 2018, the American Academy of Periodontology published new
guidelines entitled: “Three Steps to
Staging and Grading a Patient” and “Staging
and GradingPeriodontitis.” This
program will review the steps in implementing the new guidelines, patient
screening, diagnosis, treatment planning and appropriate therapies. Achieving
successful outcomes is contingent on optimal instrumentation skills in
compliance with the dental setting of 2021.
Upon
completion of this course, participants will be able to:
Identify and implement a proper periodontal
diagnosis using the updated Staging and Grading system to classify all dental
patients.
Differentiate between natural and implant
structures with attention to examination, debridement and home care aids.
Choose proper instrumentation with
consideration to safe protocols and sound clinical judgement.
Improve ergonomics with focus on extra-oral
fulcrums, sharpening and selecting advanced hand and power instruments.
Discuss and recommend evidence-based products
with an individualized approach in the prevention of all oral diseases.
Applying this AAP Classification of Staging
and Grading, small groups will review case studies to develop appropriate
treatment plans.

Needles, Lungs, Tongues. The Chemistry, Use and Effect of Psychoactive Substances
3.00
Overview:
Legal and illicit psychoactive substances are ubiquitous in
our communities, including the patients we treat daily. Use and abuse, of
psychoactive compounds date back hundreds, even thousands of years. This
program will review what are many of the most important points of use that we
must understand today, in order to mitigate acute risks when treating patients
using them and what long term risks will become inherent in patients that
continue to use them. This program will discuss these questions from both a
historical and present-day view, taking into consideration the law that governs
their use and distribution, their physiology and clinical effects, benefits and
detriments to use and what our roles and responsibilities are as health care
providers and clinicians when treatment planning.
Learning Objectives:
• Participants will receive a concise review of the most
ubiquitous drug substances, their basic chemistry and physiological effects.
• Recommendations for caution when managing dental procedures on patients using
these substances. • Drug interactions that are significant to dentistry will be
reviewed.
• Discretionary reporting, intervention and diversion for dental professionals
practicing under the influences of psychoactive substances.
This program fulfills the requirements of continuing
education for Dentists and Dental Hygienists on the impact of opioid abuse
and/or the proper prescription writing and use of opioids, along with
appropriate alternatives in the dental practice
Course Categories: Governmental Regulations: Federal / State / Local,Ethics & Law (AGD 555),Appropriate use and administration of Prescription Monitoring Program/ Federal and State laws/ Regulations of Controlled Substances,Opioids/Controlled Substances -Best Practices (prescribing, abuse, misuse, risk assessment, alternatives, appropriate storage, disposal, etc.)

Oral health professionals routinely perform oral health
assessments for the dental patient to determine
if oral disease is present. Systemic health and lifestyle practices often
contribute to oral health complications. One area in particular which has a
direct effect on oral health is open mouth breathing and poor sleep quality. Sleep
is a fundamental process of the human body which regulates core biological
functions. A lack of quality sleep can exhibit a wide range of oral, systemic,
and cognitive health problems. Dental hygienists are in a prime position to
recognize poor sleep health and potentially save lives. As health care
professionals and care-takers, dental hygienists often put themselves last when
taking care of their own health. This program will bring awareness and provide
solutions on how to improve sleep health/sleep hygiene.
Objectives:
1. Identify sleep health concerns
during the dental hygiene assessment process.
2. Discuss chronic health
diagnoses and medications that can signify a sleep health concern.
3. Introduce the current methods
of identifying poor sleep and how to improve poor sleep.
4. Discuss knowledge, awareness,
and expectations of sleep in today\'s society.
5. Help participants identify if
they have poor sleep health/sleep hygiene.
6. Educate participants on how to
protect and improve their own sleep health/sleep hygiene.

As humans are living
longer than ever before, changes in the brain are becoming more prevalent among
elders. A few decades ago, these changes led to a diagnosis of senility and a
life confined to a “county home” for most. Today brain changes are better
understood than in the past and society is learning to work with individuals
who are living with a diagnosis of some type of dementia. This trend has dental
professionals caring for patients they may not be prepared to serve. This
presentation will walk attendees through numerous aspects of care regarding
patients with dementia in the hopes of having the best appointment outcomes.
Upon completion of this
course attendees will
Know the magnitude of dementia
diagnosis in the population
Describe the different types
dementia
Understand ways to make the
dental office dementia friendly
List communication modifications
that lead to better appointment outcomes
Share
dementia friendly information with dental team members
Dementia Friendly Certificate: Individual course
attendees will have the opportunity to receive a “Dementia Friendly”
Certificate from this course.
Dementia Friendly Business
Certificate: If
50% of the team members in a practice take this course, they can receive a
“Dementia Friendly Business” Certificate to display in their office.

Arginine, Hydrogen Peroxide, & Water: Magical weapons in the war against oral dysbiosis (Breaking the Cycle of Blame & Shame-Combatting Dysbiosis)
2.00
Overview:
Dysbiosis is
a new way to understand oral diseases like caries, periodontitis, gingivitis,
and candidiasis.
For decades
dental professionals have relied on fluoride, brushing, and string floss to
prevent, control, or reverse these conditions. While these approaches have
merit, current research shows there are other chemical and mechanical pathways
to disrupt biofilm and restore healthy pH levels. This course takes a fresh
look at arginine bicarbonate, hydrogen peroxide tray therapy, and fluid
dynamics, translating research into real world options. Learn new
ways to support homeostasis where healthy
microbes proliferate, and pathogens can’t survive, and stable health as the
long-term goal.
Objectives:
Understand how arginine bicarbonate creates a
healthy, sustainable microbial community
Appreciate how targeted hydrogen peroxide
therapy supports a healthy subgingival microbiome
Discover the role of fluid dynamics in daily
biofilm disruption
