Dr Shannon E. Mills, an internationally recognized expert in dental infection prevention will share his observations on how the profession has fared in the first year of the COVID-19 Pandemic. Despite early warnings that dental treatment posed a high risk for viral transmission, dental practices have not proven to be epicenters for healthcare acquired infections.

The pandemic however continues to exert profound impact on both the profession and business of dentistry. Have the experts overstated the risks; or were infection prevention recommendations from CDC, OSHA, and others effective in avoiding virus transmission in the clinical setting? Will we ever return to “normal” or are COVID based practices the new “standard” precautions”? How will new infection prevention guidelines and regulations affect dental practice? Will new variants drive additional pandemic surges, or will SARS CoV-2 become a seasonal virus like colds and influenza? Are future pandemics on the horizon?

Dr Mills will also review current CDC recommendations including interim guidelines for dealing with COVID-19. He will offer insights on how new CDC guidelines as well as OSHA and other federal agency rules may affect the practice of dentistry as we seek to understand how our profession can be prepared going forward.
