Overview: The purpose of this course is to review the most commonly
prescribed medications taken by patients treated in the oral health care
environment. The Dental healthcare provider prescribes a number of drugs
ranging from local anesthetics to antimicrobials and drugs used for pain relief
including opioids. These medications may
have an impact on the oral and systemic health of a patient. In addition, drug interactions and side effects from these drugs
may impact the dental practice. Popular drugs in use today as well as new drugs in dentistry will also be discussed. A comprehensive review of drugs and dental guidelines to manage the oral side effects of these medications will be presented. Course objectives: Upon completion of this course, the participants will be
able to: ·
Identify and
discuss commonly prescribed medications taken by patients treated in the oral
health care setting. ·
Identify
common drug interactions of significance to dental professionals. ·
Identify and
discuss adverse effects of drugs prescribed by the dentist ·
Identify and
discuss adverse effects of systemic drugs the patient presents with. · Discuss the management of oral side effects caused by medications. Sanjay Chand, MBBS, MD
Dr. Chand currently teaches pharmacology and therapeutics
in the Dental, Dental hygiene, and Nursing programs at University of Detroit
Mercy and participates in clinical teaching and chairside therapeutics for
dental students. He also teaches the Nurse Anesthesia and Physician
assistant programs at the University of Detroit Mercy’s McNichols
campus. Dr. Chand earned his M.D. in Medicine from the Christian
Medical College and Hospital (India) where he specialized in Clinical
Pharmacology. Dr. Chand is director of Infection Control and
Safety is responsible for infection control policies and their
implementation in accordance with CDC guidelines.

Pittsburgh – School of Dental Medicine in 1989 and completed a hospital-based
General Practice Residency (GPR) and Masters in Dental Sciences at the
University of Rochester’s Strong Memorial Hospital and School of Medicine and
Dentistry, respectively. Dr. Singletary is a former Director of the GPR Program
and Associate Clinical Professor at the University of Minnesota School of
Dentistry, Yale University School of Medicine, and Yale-New Haven Hospital. Dr.
Singletary joined Midwest Dental in June 2018. He practices General Dentistry

Overview: Oral cancer is one of the most treatable of the major
cancers when discovered and treated early. Yet oral cancer (the sixth most
common cancer in the US) is the only
major cancer who’s incidence is rising when all other cancers tracked by the
ACS are declining. Dental professionals
are uniquely positioned to screen patients and detect oral cancer in its early,
treatable stage.
This course provides a review of the topic and practical
recommendations for screening patients in the general practice setting. Key topics covered are:

incidence of oral cancer and its devastating effects in the general and at-risk

Review the latest research and discuss the
findings as they relate to screening in the general practice dental office. ·

clear understanding of the best, most cost efficient technology for finding and
treating oral cancer. ·

NELSON L RHODUS, DMD, MPH, FICD, FRCSEd Dr. Nelson Rhodus is a Morse Distinguished Professor and Director of the Division of Oral Medicine, Oral Diagnosis and Radiology in the Department of Diagnostic and Biological Sciences in the University of Minnesota School of Dentistry . He is also an Adjunct Professor of Otolaryngology in the Medical School. He is a Diplomate (and current President) of the American Board of Oral Medicine, He is also Past- President of the American Academy of Oral Medicine. He is an inductee in the University of Minnesota Academic Health Center Academy of Excellence and the Academy of Distinguished Teachers and the University of Minnesota Scholar’s Walk of Fame. He is a Fellow in the International College of Dentists and of the American College of Dentists and a Fellow in the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh. He is an Attending member of the Hospital Staff of the University of Minnesota Hospital and Clinics, the Minnesota Cancer Center and a consultant to the US Navy and Hennepin Co. Medical Center. Dr. Rhodus directs several Oral medicine courses and has been awarded "Professor of the Year" for fourteen years and is a recipient the School of Dentistry CENTURY CLUB PROFESSOR of the YEAR.
Dr.
Rhodus is active in basic and clinical research and he has published over three
hundred- seventy-five scientific papers and abstracts and he has presented over
four-hundred lectures and courses throughout the United States and abroad. He
is an editor of the Journal of Oral
Surgery, Oral medicine, Oral Pathology and Oral Radiology. He co-authors two textbooks: DENTAL MANAGEMENT OF THE MEDICALLY

Overview: A distinction must be made between implant survival and implant
success. Survival means there is still some level of osseointegration of
the implant in the bone. However, more discerning patients and dental
teams have noted a host of complications that will not permit us to use the
word “success” when describing many cases. Achieving long term esthetics,
function, and peri-implant health has become more important as we raise the
standards for implant therapy. It is simply not enough to achieve
osseointegration anymore.

Donald Cohen, DMD
Dr. Donald Cohen is a licensed practicing dentist in New York State for
over thirty years with over 20 years of teaching experience at Columbia
University SDOS and over 20 years as an Attending Dentist at Columbia
Presbyterian Hospital in New York City.
He is past president of the New York State Society of Dentistry For
Children and is He is Chief Clinical Officer Officer of HealthFirst and Banyan
International where in addition to creating emergency medical kits to office
based practices, institutional locations and airlines, he directs the Banyan
and HealthFirst Medical Advisory Board (MAB). The MAB advises on appropriate
medications and devices for emergency medical kits as well as substitutions
during national manufacturer drug shortages, such as Vasopressin.
Additionally, he lectures throughout the U.S. on Emergency Medicine.

Dr. Grabeman completed his
undergraduate studies at Vanderbilt University and earned his DDS degree at The
Ohio State University. After dental
school, he completed a General Practice Residency at The Medical College of
Ohio at Toledo. Dr. Grabeman is also a
graduate of the Pankey Institute. He applied
the concepts of Pankey in his Dayton, Ohio practice for 39 years before joining
Midwest Dental.
