Our expert panel to include Kate Soal RDH, MEd, President of ADHA Massachusetts, Katherine Pelullo RDH, MEd, ADHA Massachusetts Chair of Regulation & Practice and Jacyn Stultz RDH, MS – Secretary and RDH Member of the Board of Registration in Dentistry. The panel will discuss and answer questions about what is happening in Massachusetts.
The updated AAP
classification system created in 2017 represents a multi-dimensional staging
and grading framework for periodontitis and implant disease status. This course
will examine the concepts of staging and grading to classify each patient by
complexity of case management, likelihood of less predictable response to
therapy, and potential for periodontitis development. Diagnosing, treatment
planning, and executing appropriate and necessary periodontal therapies will be
reviewed utilizing case presentations and group activities. A hallmark feature
of the updated system brings opportunities for more case specific patient care.
The need for calibration and clinician alignment with the new classification
system will be discussed along with narrative examples for documentation
recommendations.
Objectives:
Examine
the historical timeline and evolution of the AAP Classification System.
Discuss
the new staging/grading system for periodontal disease and how it will benefit
patient care and management.
Create
treatment modalities that are evidence-based protocols for specific types of
periodontal diseases according to the new classification system.
Identify
patients who may benefit from adjunctive strategies of disease management and
overall health surveillance based on the updated classifications.
Develop
individualized homecare regimens utilizing staging and grading to motivate and
encourage patients to improve their oral health.
Marianne DryerRDH, MEd is a
dynamic speaker, educator and corporate consultant in curriculum development.
She has lectured nationally and internationally on periodontal instrumentation
with a focus on ultrasonic technique, risk assessment, infection prevention and
radiology technique. Marianne’s experience in dentistry spans over 30 years.
She is a graduate of Forsyth School for Dental Hygienists, Old Dominion
University and received her Master’s in Education from St Joseph’s College of
Maine. Marianne was the first-year coordinator at Collin College in Dallas
Texas for six years where she was selected for the Outstanding Faculty Award
and was nominated for the Advisor of the Year. She has been a faculty member at
Cape Cod Community College since 2007. Marianne is also a Periodontal
Instrumentation Instructor for DH Methods of Education, Inc., an educational
program for dental and dental hygiene faculty. She has been a strong advocate
for introducing ultrasonic instrumentation into dental hygiene curriculums
earlier and with more structured, foundational content.

Different parts of the
face grow at different times and rates. This course will explain the effects of
the physiological functions of respiration, swallowing, mastication and speech
in the growing child. The oral health professional will learn how to recognize
facial growth disturbances that can lead to sleep apnea, hyperactivity, ADHD,
lethargy, mouth breathing, and bedwetting in pediatric patients. Dr. Anna will
share myofunctional habits and appliances used to treat children holistically
during their growth and development to maximize proper facial and jaw alignment
to prevent mouth breathing, poor posture, crowded dentition, etc.
Objectives:
In this course the
attendees will:
Learn
about different stages of child development and understand what is considered
to be normal.
Identify
Myofunctional habits from the moment you meet a patient in the waiting room,
what questions are best to ask, and see certain signs and symptoms that will
confirm this.
Determine

I am a retired general
dentist who maintained a successful practice for 40 years. During the last
three years of my practice, I researched and developed clinical procedures for
this non-surgical treatment of dental caries using Silver Diamine Fluoride
(SDF) in combination with existing glass ionomer cements and compounds. This
combination technique is called a Silver Modified Atraumatic Restorative
Technique. (SMART). These methodologies are the same as those employed by the
leaders and experts in the dental community. I personally found this approach
to be extremely successful. I used this technique on most of my young
patient-population including our Medicaid children. As we gained experience and
realized SDF’s potential, we began treating selected elderly patients and our
physically or mentally handicapped patients.
Objectives:
·Give a brief
history of silver nitrate and SDF
·Detail the
science, both chemistry and microbiology, of the interaction between SDF and
tooth structure.
·Emphasize the
importance of complete and thorough understanding of SDF by all staff members
in order to implement a successful SDF program.
·Detail specific
SDF and SDF related protocols, including but not limited to, combining fluoride
varnish and glass ionomer materials.
·Review Informed Consent Forms and how it
dovetails with SDF education.
·Review all
related CDT codes for SDF use and success
Speaker
John S. Echternach DDS is a retired general dentist who
maintained a private practice in Henniker, NH for 40 years. He grew up outside Philadelphia and
received his B.S. in Biology at Delaware Valley College. Following
undergraduate school, he attended Temple University Dental School and received
his D.D.S. in 1975. He is a member of the American Dental Association,
New Hampshire Dental Society (NHDS) and Concord Dental Society (CDS). His role
in organized dentistry includes more than 16 years in a leadership capacity in
both the NHDS and the CDS.
In
retirement, John has assumed the role as a teacher of healthcare professionals
with his focus on a specific treatment: the science and clinical applications
of silver diamine fluoride (SDF). After learning about the uses of SDF toward
the end of his career, he successfully used this method on both children and
adults for the last 3 years in his Henniker practice.
In his spare
time, Dr. Echternach enjoys bike riding and power walking with his wife, Judie.
He also practices tai chi and tinkers with old clocks in his cozy clock shop.

Barbara Sheerin RDH, MEd. has more than 30 years of experience
in the dental hygiene field. Her career has been multifaceted including
clinical dental hygiene, dental hygiene education and lecturer. She has been
published in various professional journals and is a contributor to the eleventh
edition of the Clinical Practice of the Dental Hygienist by Dr. Esther Wilkins.
She is a Past-President of the Massachusetts’s Dental Hygienist Association, a
life- long member of ADHA and has served as a Student Advisor to American
Dental Hygienists Association for many years. She is a member of the American Academy of
Dental Hygiene and a recipient of the Johnson and Johnson Excellence in Dental
Hygiene award. Barbara also has been awarded the Educator of the Year award
from the Massachusetts Dental Society, the Constituent Hygienist of the Year
for MDHA, and the 2011 MDS Hygienist of the Year. Currently Barbara serves as
the Administrative Assistant for the Massachusett’s Dental Hygiene Association
during her retirement years.

This course aims to bridge the gap between
medicine and dentistry educating the learner on the relationship of sleep
disordered breathing to growth, development, performance and
longevity. Certain oral habits and breathing obstructions can force your
body to compensate for lower oxygen levels. Sometimes you may not even be aware
that this is happening – especially if it occurs during sleep. When the body
struggles in this way for an extended time, one can face an increased risk
for numerous health problems, including heart disease and diabetes. Learn how
to recognize proper tongue positioning, swallowing, facial growth, breathing
techniques and how to screen patients so that they can breathe freely and
improve their quality of life.
Objectives:
Upon
completion of the course, the attendees will:
Understand

Catalano MDgraduated
with a BS from Columbia University School of Engineering followed by an MD
degree from the Mount Sinai School of Medicine (MSH) in New York City. He
completed his residency at MSH and became a full time faculty member (1990-1999),
where he became an Associate Professor of Otolaryngology, Neurosurgery, and
Maxillofacial Surgery. He then became Chair of Otolaryngology at the Lahey
Clinic (2000-2009), followed by Chair of Surgery and VP of Surgical Services at
Caritas/Steward Health Care (2009-2012).
Dr. Catalano is now Chief of
Otolaryngology at SEMC, Professor of Otolaryngology at Tufts University,
Director of Rhinology fellowship (SEMC) and Medical Director for Steward. He is
President and Founder of the Foundation for Innovation, Education and Research
in Otolaryngology (2011-present) and organizer of two annual medical
conferences, Open Forum and ENT Summit.

Lancette VanGuilder, RDH, BS graduated with her dental hygiene
degree from the University of South Dakota in 1995 and has been actively
involved in dental hygiene education, leadership and advocacy on the local,
state and national level over the last 23 years. Lancette works as a clinician
in private practice, in the corporate world as a professional educator, as a
public health dental hygienist and is an internationally recognized continuing
education speaker. Lancette is a past recipient of the Nevada Dental Hygienist
of the Year award, is a past president of the Nevada Dental Hygienists
Association and served on the board of directors for the American Dental
Hygienists Association as the District 12 Trustee, representing 6 states on the

The prevalence of electronic nicotine delivery systems (ENDS) usage, also known as vaping, has increased exponentially in recent years, with the majority of users being young adults. In order to develop cessation initiatives aimed at younger populations, it is critical to first determine the level of understanding they have regarding the negative effects vaping has on their general and oral health.
This course will cover trends in current vaping-related oral health research, and explore the health implications of vaping from a dental hygiene perspective. In addition, attitudes, opinions and perceptions towards the oral health risks of engaging in vaping will be presented.
Objectives:
Upon completion of the course, the dental professional will gain an understanding of the negative health effects of vaping and be able to:
Identify various vaping products and trends in usage
Interpret current data regarding vaping prevalence, especially among the young adult population

Maragliano-Muniz, DMD
Dr. Maragliano-Muniz is a board-eligible
prosthodontist and earned her certificate from the UCLA School of Dentistry
after obtaining her D.M.D. from Tufts University School of Dental Medicine. She
is also a former dental hygienist: she
earned her B.S.D.H. degree from Northeastern University and the Forsyth School
for Dental Hygienists, A.A.S. in Dental Hygiene and A.S. degree in Math and
Science from SUNY Orange in New York.
Since being awarded the 2010 Adult
Preventive Care Practice of the Year by the American Dental Association, Dr.
Maragliano-Muniz lectures nationally. She has numerous publications and
lectures extensively about Implementing CAMBRA in the private practice,
explaining the role of caries risk factors to the disease process and the
clinical effects of CAMBRA.
Dr. Maragliano-Muniz is the Editorial
