Overview: This course reviews the 20 most commonly prescribed medications taken by patients treated in the oral health care environment. A comprehensive review of drugs and dental care products used to manage the oral side effects of medications will be presented. Overview: Periodontal disease has been identified as the body’s most abundant source of chronic low-grade inflammation. The public’s awareness of the dangers of inflammation is increasing at a rapid pace. Whether it’s inflammation in the mouth or in the body, people realize it is unhealthy and dangerous. As dental professionals, we need to understand how inflammation works not only in the oral cavity, but systemically as well. We need to know the associations between oral disease and certain systemic diseases and how to properly educate our patients. We need to recognize the signs and symptoms we learn from our patients in the dental chair that could indicate systemic disease. We also need to bridge the gap between the medical and dental fields to best care for our patients. Interprofessional collaboration between both fields would greatly improve outcomes for our patients, as all aspects of their health would be addressed.
