Overview: : Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) is a mental health disorder that results from exposure to a traumatic or stressful event, including, but not limited to: military experience, childhood events, sexual assault, abuse, or previous dental experiences. Roughly 4 in 50 people will experience PTSD in their lifetime. Dental health care providers working in many types of clinical settings may experience an individual suffering from some form of PTSD during their daily practice. Since receiving oral care can be an insurmountable challenge for an individual with PTSD it is critical for dental health care professionals to obtain education about this growing health care crisis. This will enable professionals to deliver effective treatment, in addition to providing support for the family members who care for these patients. This course will explore the various forms of PTSD along with their risk factors, signs, and symptoms. The course will provide examples of oral implications a patient may experience due to PTSD as well as discuss ways in which the provider can help alleviate these effects, including some up and coming therapies that can be implemented into the dental practice or recommended by a dental professional. The course will conclude discussion on how to navigate treatment plans, provide trauma-informed care, and build relationships with patients and their families who suffer from PTSD. There are over 46 million people in the United States today that have Alzheimer’s disease starting in their brains-silently. There is an enormous window of opportunity in prevention we can do now to delay or even prevent Alzheimer’s Disease. In this program attendees will learn evidence based, safe ways to not only live longer lives but better lives, encouraging a longer Brainspan. Optimizing lifestyle is imperative and using multi-disciplinary approaches that include us-dental providers yields the best results. Science proves that medical lifestyle should be more tightly controlled, and precision medicine is best. We spend 1/3 of our life sleeping and is proven to be of the utmost importance. The 2 most feared diseases throughout developed nations are cancer and Alzheimer’s Disease both of which are related to inadequate sleep. Sleep revs up the immune system, fine tunes the balance of insulin and circulating glucose, regulates appetite and helps to maintain the microbiome of your gut. It is directly linked to cardiovascular health and lowers blood pressure. Beautiful sleep staves off anxiety and depression and there is not one major organ or process that isn’t enhanced by optimal sleep. With over 17,000 well-scrutinized scientific reports proving the benefits of the miracle called a full night’s sleep it is one of the biggest health challenges in the 21st century. We will discuss the history and mystery of sleep, how sleep will reset our brains and body health and how we in the dental community can help not only in the sleep apnea arena but in overall sleep hygiene. The dental office is no exception to experiencing anxiety in themselves and in their patients. By empowering dental professionals on their specific contributions they can make in the clinical practice, they can help support the many patients into accepting dental treatment without letting disease take over. Overview: The dental office is no stranger to feelings of vulnerability and anxiousness, but what if you were to add on unconscious bias and stigma to the place where you need to seek treatment? There is a higher chance that you wouldn’t seek treatment! This is what we hope to learn about with treating the LGBTQ+ community and why they are considered a vulnerable population. With our current culture of division, it’s more important than ever for dental professionals to use their platform filled with opportunities to foster relationships and build trust with their patients so they get the best care possible. Upon completion of this course, participants will identify familiar terms used by the LGBTQ+ community, recognize your unconscious bias and increase your emotional intelligence, identify affects in the mouth during gender confirmation, and modify strategies to enhance cultural competencies with in your office.
