Course Description

Course discussion is a continuation of the Comprehensive Health Prevention for Older Adults, Part I course and will review common findings in the oral environment, including hypo-/hypersalivation, oral movement disorders, and hard and soft tissue diseases. Nutritional status, activities of daily living and oral hygiene will also be discussed. Participants will learn how to individualize preventive strategies to improve desired health outcomes for their elderly patients for reducing caries, gingival disease and altered salivation. Product selection criteria for antiseptic mouth rinses, fluorides, non-fluoride agents, salivary substitutes, power toothbrushing and interdental cleaning, and denture care will be reviewed.

• Identify desired health outcomes of implemented preventive strategies.

• Describe important variables that influence an individual’s ability to attain oral wellness.

• Identify components of a preventive practice plan to improve oral health.

• Discuss how oral disease impacts oral health quality of life

.• Discuss product selection criteria to prevent, manage, and/or treat oral symptoms and diseases.

About the speaker:

Dr. Spolarich is an internationally recognized author and speaker on pharmacology and the care of medically complex patients. She has presented over 1,000 invited lectures and has over 125 professional publications. She is Professor, Course Director of Clinical Medicine and Pharmacology, and Director of Research at the Arizona School of Dentistry & Oral Health, A.T. Still University (ATSU), where she teaches part-time in the Special Care Clinic. Ann was awarded fellowship status in special care dental hygiene from the Special Care Dentistry Association in 2016.
