student affairs officer at the School of Dentistry, responsible for all students enrolled in the dental, dental hygiene, and graduate specialty programs. As a presenter, Dr. Daniels’ expertise is in impostor syndrome, suicide prevention, mental health advocacy & awareness, diversity, equity & inclusion, higher education leadership, and fostering student success in post-secondary education. Dr. Daniels’ current research includes a nationwide, multi-site study on impostor phenomenon in dental students and research on the mental health impacts of COVID-19-related stay-at-home orders on dental students. She serves as course director for the first-year seminar course for dental students and as an instructor in the dental ethics and professionalism curriculum. In recent years she has presented at several conferences, including the American Dental Education Association (ADEA) Annual Session, ADEA Fall Meetings, American College Personnel Association, and the NASPA-Student Affairs Educators regional and national conferences. Dr. Daniels is a Deputy Title IX Coordinator, Jesuit Leadership Institute graduate, and a QPR Institute suicide prevention protocol trainer.
Objectives:
At the completion of
this course, participants will be able to:
· Define implicit bias, unconscious bias, health justice, cultural humility and cultural sensitivity
· Recognize how bias impacts health
equity, and race-based health outcomes
· Understand how health equity and
justice impact patient care outcomes in primary care and oral health care
Bailey Andersen, L.M.S.W. serves as the Personal Counselor and Wellness Coordinator at the University of Detroit Mercy School of Dentistry. In her role, Ms. Andersen provides daily individual psychotherapy for the School of Dentistry students, offers consultation services to faculty and staff, and delivers programming on a broad range of mental and behavioral health issues. Ms. Andersen is a recognized speaker on a variety of topics including student wellness, interdisciplinary approaches to mental health, suicide prevention, and stress management. Ms. Andersen received her Bachelor of Arts degree in International Studies & English Literature from Loyola University Chicago and her Master of Social Work degree with a mental health specialization from the University of Michigan.
Course Summary: This course will serve as a wonderful introduction to mental and emotional wellness. Taught by a licensed clinical social worker, this course will aim to provide participants with a greater understanding of how to navigate or mitigate moments of stress and turmoil.
Course Description:
This course will provide an overview for what mental health is, how to talk about it and what
impacts it. Although less taboo than in decades past, many of us still struggle to find ways to
support ourselves, our loved ones, or even our patients in their moments of despair and
anguish. This course will make heavy topics feel more accessible and digestible. Concepts that
will be covered include coping skills, managing negative thoughts, embracing radical
acceptance, the mind/body/spirit connection and more. This course will emphasize the
importance of healthcare providers being stewards of their own health, not just their patients.
Course Learning Objectives: At the conclusion of the course: *Participants will gain a greater understanding of the impact stress has on our bodies
*Participants will learn about the connection between our thoughts, feelings and actions
*Participants will learn several new coping skills to utilize during moments of stress and anxiety
*Participants will learn two new concepts for managing painful feelings
