Overview

MO Hy-PAC, the Missouri Dental Hygienists’ Political Action Committee, will be offering another course as a fundraiser to support candidates running for state office in Missouri. (See http://www.mdha.org/hypac.html for more information about the PAC).



The hybrid course will be both in-person and online.  There will also be an additional “hands-on” component to the presentation- Head, Neck and Oral Cancer Screening Review and Practice. There will be a tour of the dental school following the program for those who attend in-person. 4 CEUs will be given.

After a review of how to describe oral mucosal soft tissue lesions, a potpourri of oral pathology cases focusing on oral mucosal white lesions, desquamative gingivitis, and two infectious diseases will be presented.

Objectives: By the end of this course, participants will be able to:

1) Define the different elementary lesion terms.

2) Correctly describe an oral mucosal soft tissue lesion.

3) Provide an appropriate differential diagnosis for an oral mucosal white lesion.

4) Clinically differentiate between reactive and potentially premalignant oral mucosal white lesions.

5) Define leukoplakia.

6) Define desquamative gingivitis.

7) Provide an appropriate differential diagnosis for oral pathologies that present with desquamative gingivitis.

8) Recognize the oral manifestations of certain infectious diseases.

About the Speakers:

Richard J. Vargo, DMD, DABOMP, FAAOM is an Assistant Professor and the Director of Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology at A.T. Still University – Missouri School of Dentistry & Oral Health

(ATSU-MOSDOH) and at the St. Louis Dental Center in St. Louis, MO. For his clinical and didactic teaching at ATSU-MOSDOH, he has received the Outstanding Faculty Award from the Class of 2020, the Outstanding Teaching Award from the Class of 2022, and the Outstanding Specialty Care Unit Director Award from the Class of 2022. He is an oral pathologist at SSM Health Saint Louis University Hospital, where he has a clinical practice in the Department of Otolaryngology – Head and Neck Surgery and a surgical oral pathology practice in the Department of Pathology; an adjunct assistant professor at the Saint Louis University School of Medicine; and on the expert panel of the Missouri Telehealth Network’s Oral Health ECHO.

Dr. Vargo received his undergraduate degree with distinction from the University of Virginia, graduating early in 2010. He earned his Doctor of Dental Medicine degree from the University of Pittsburgh School of Dental Medicine in 2015, where he received numerous awards and honors, including the Omicron Kappa Upsilon Dr. William S. Kramer Award of Excellence. Subsequently, he completed a residency in Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center and earned diplomate status with the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology in 2018. He is a Fellow of both the American Academy of Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology and the American Academy of Oral Medicine.

Dr. Vargo’s research interests include oral ulcers, dental abnormalities, oral manifestations of HIV and syphilis, and oral effects of cannabis use. He has authored and co-authored numerous publications in peer-reviewed journals and has presented his work both nationally and internationally. He also serves as a peer reviewer for several national and international journals.

Dr. Vargo is currently pursuing an MBA degree with a Healthcare Administration specialization. In his spare time, he enjoys running; riding his exercise bike; eating baked goods; reviewing restaurants; posting educational oral pathology cases on his Instagram; and cheering on the Virginia Cavaliers, Pitt Panthers, and St. Louis Cardinals.

Diann Bomkamp, RDH, BSDH, CDHC graduated from Marquette University over 53 years ago where she earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Dental Hygiene. At Marquette, she was elected to Sigma Phi Alpha and Gamma Pi Epsilon, the University’s Jesuit Women’s Honor Society.

In 2003, she pursued a Community Dental Health Certificate from Northeast Wisconsin Technical College. She has worked as a clinical dental hygienist in both general and periodontal practice. In addition, she worked part-time for the Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services’ Oral Health Program as an oral health consultant, has taught dental hygiene at St. Louis Community College at

Forest Park, and has examined candidates for dental hygiene licensure over 30 years for the Central Regional Dental Testing Service (CRDTS) and the Commission on Dental Competency Assessments (CDCA/WREB).

Diann has served as President of the Greater St. Louis and Missouri Dental Hygienists’ Association and was a 17-year Chairperson of MDHA’s Legislative Committee where she pursued many legislative changes to the Missouri Practice Act. She was the 2008-2009 President of the American Dental Hygienists’ Association and as Past-President, also served as the Chairperson of the ADHA Institute for Oral Health.

Diann has been active in the community and ran for state representative in Missouri’s 82nd district and served on the City of Creve Coeur’s Ethic’s Commission. She currently is the Chairperson of the Missouri Dental Hygienists’ Political Action Committee and the MDHA Leadership Development Committee, serves on the MDHA Legislative Council, and has served as the MDHA liaison to the Missouri Coalition for Oral Health.

Diann has been married to Gary over 50 years and has two grown married children, Jack and Monica, and four grandchildren.

She is the recipient of the ADHA/Warner Lambert Excellence in Dental Hygiene Award, the ADHA Alfred C. Fones Award and the Outstanding Marquette University Dental Hygiene Alumna Award.
