When patients are in search of dental care, they want to be able to trust and know that their providers are aware of who they are and their health care needs.  For providers, this is centered around their awareness and abilities to respond to the sensibilities of patients whose cultures and values may be very different from their own, also known as cultural competency. A lack of diversity in medicine leads to poor cultural competency amongst healthcare providers, which triggers ineffective communication and bias.  Healthcare providers that understand the importance of recognizing and eliminating bias and stereotyping take an essential first step in reducing long-standing disparities in oral health.

We will dive into the social determinants of health, education to the masses, and cultural awareness from the provider to patient standpoint in order to improve the overall oral healthcare experience amongst all in our community.

Learning Objectives:

  1.      Investigate the importance of access to care as it pertains to the oral health of minorities, reasons it may lead to poor health outcomes, and steps to prevent this
  2.      Explain the value of oral health literacy at a young age and its direct correlation with oral health outcomes
  3.      Focus on the internal and external factors that impact the shortage of dentists in underserved areas
  4.      Describe reasons patients may feel less comfortable in the dental setting, and provide skills, techniques, and circumstances to help alleviate this
