Overview: Dementia and the Dental Impact Course Description: Alzheimer’s Disease is a public health emergency. Since 2000 the cases have increased 89% and over 300 people die every day from the disease. The root cause is debatable, but we know connections, we know modifiable risk factors and lifestyle interventions can make a difference. Taking care of our brains must begin early. It takes perseverance and discipline, but the payoffs are for life and how we live today impacts our tomorrows. You will be challenged and revered for your role as a healthcare provider. You will clearly understand once again how your skills not only changes patients’ lives but may very well save them from one of the most tragic diseases we have ever known. Learning Objectives: Understand how Alzheimer’s disease is associated with different etiologies and pathophysiological processes including the current hypothesis of bacteria, yeast and herpes virus setting off a cascade of events leading to the disease. Determine how existing dental care practices can be adapted to educate patients on the risk factors of and preventive measures against dementia and Alzheimer’s Disease. Identify how critical sleep activities relate to memory storage and brain toxin clearing, tools to get better sleep and the role of sleep apnea. Utilize current prevention strategies to reduce your own personal risk as well as the tools to relate the information to your family and coworkers. Anne O. Rice, BS, RDH, FAAOSH, CDP is a graduate of Wichita State University then continued her studies and earned a bachelor’s degree in oral health promotion. She is a graduate of the BaleDoneen Preceptorship course for cardiovascular disease prevention for health-care practitioners. After almost 30 years of clinical care, she found Oral Systemic Seminars and is passionate about educating the community on all things oral systemic health and is focused on prevention strategies for dementia and those relationships in dentistry. She is a monthly contributor to Today’s RDH, and has also written for Dentistry IQ, RDH Magazine and Dental Entrepreneur Woman. In 2020, Anne became a Fellow with the American Academy of Oral Systemic Health, a Certified Dementia Practitioner and became Certified as a Brain Longevity® Specialist with the Alzheimer’s Research and Prevention Foundation.
