One person every hour dies from the disease of Oral
Cancer.Due to a high instance of late
stage detection; less than 50% of those diagnosed will survive only 5
years.The incidence of HPV-related
oropharyngeal cancer in a “non-typical” Oral Cancer patient is on the rise;
growing to an astounding 70-90% of the oropharyngeal cancers being linked to an
HPV infection.
Dental professionals are in a unique situation where it is
imperative to educate ourselves with the evidence-based Oral Cancer risk
factors and HPV prevention education measures. We need better understanding and confidence during our intra and extra
oral head and neck examinations and communication with patients.
Upon completion of this course the learner will be able to:
1.Identify patient risk factors associated
with Head, Neck and Oral Cancers.
2.Recognize oral abnormalities.
3.Implement a protocol for Head, Neck and
Oral Cancer routine examinations.
4.Confidently communicate HPV risk and
carcinogenic habit prevention with patients in health history interview.

The world of medicine is trying desperately to take its many
pieces of the health puzzle and put them together to support health and cure
disease. In dentistry, we’re still perfecting those pieces so that when we do
all come together we have a much higher level of care focusing on medicine’s
successes and avoiding the pitfalls.
Dental hygiene is one of those early pieces. As we delve
into oral systemic health, and how it relates to the practice of dental
hygiene, we find that airway and geriatric care are new and exciting ways to
practice to the highest level - past the glass ceiling. Angie Stone and Shirley
Gutkowski are uniquely qualified to address these topics due to having
developed strategies that support patients and dental hygienists in these two
areas of practice.
Learning objectives
Show how dental hygiene provided oral hygiene in dependent
people is superior to any other
Prioritize dental hygiene care at every age to support
dependence in old age
Restate the cause and prevention of ADHD
Explain the relationship dental hygienists have with the
airway
