Periodontal endoscopy offers dentists and patients non-surgical, predictable treatment solutions. The periodontal endoscope offers direct visual access to the root surface within the periodontal pocket without a surgical flap. This course demonstrates the role of periodontal endoscopy and its benefits. Participants will analyze the processes and results of traditional pocket reduction surgery compared to non-surgical endoscope treatment. We will explore advanced diagnostics via magnified sub-gingival visualization which allows clinicians to identify periodontal and peri-implant etiologies and potential complications with healing. Overview: Infection Control for the Dental Professional Friday, September 24, 2021 10:30a.m. - 12:30pm EST 2 ceus Dental healthcare providers (DHCP) have a professional responsibility to implement proper infection control practices. Federal and state standards and guidance protect clinician and patients against the transmission of potentially infectious agents. This course will provide a comprehensive review of clinical compliance as it relates to the regulations established by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and governed by state professional licensing boards. The speaker will detail the mandatory requirements dental offices must perform in order to be fully compliant, including hand hygiene, waterline asepsis, sterilization and disinfection and standard precautions. While risk has also been an inherent component in the practice of dentistry, the prevalence of Covid-19 infection throughout the world has heightened our awareness of specific infection control measures, such as respiratory hygiene., environmental infection control and personal protective equipment. This course will acknowledge and discuss the additional challenges associated with treating patients during a public health pandemic. Learning Objectives: List and define important terms in infection control. Understand the CDC\'s Guidelines for Infection Control in the Dental Setting and its implementation in clinical practice. Its capabilities will empower patients, improve access to care, and assist providers in disease diagnosis, treatment, and management, ultimately improving health outcomes and reducing treatment costs. In dentistry, AI can support risk assessment, improve patient literacy, and enhance treatment planning and acceptance through radiographic visualization and interpretation of disease. While dental professionals understand patient care and operational management, currently, knowledge and understanding about AI and its function in dentistry is not widespread. This course will review the ways in which AI can impact dentistry, including improving access to care and health literacy as well as standardizing the approach to disease management. Overview: Silent Suffering: Selective Mutism, What Dental Professionals Should Know Saturday, September 25, 2021 9:30a.m. - 10:30a.m. EST 1ceu Communication is vital in our ability to assess, understand and comprehensively treat our patient’s dental needs. A child with Selective Mutism is so overcome with anxiety that they may appear dazed and are unable to speak. Often, in our efforts to try to “win over” the child, we compound their anxiety resulting in an unsatisfactory and unproductive dental visit. Selective Mutism is a complex childhood anxiety disorder characterized by a child’s inability to speak and communicate effectively in select social settings, such as school, yet they can speak and communicate in settings where they are comfortable, secure, and relaxed. Diagnostic criteria of SM in the DSM-V indicate failure to speak is not due to a lack of knowledge of, or comfort with, the spoken language. Yet due in part to its relative obscurity Selective Mutism is often misdiagnosed, misunderstood and mismanaged. This course will give a brief overview of Selective Mutism. Discussion will touch upon diagnostic criteria, etiology, behavioral characteristics, misconceptions and education/referral information. We will also discuss ways in which to best prepare a child with SM for treatment in the dental office. Learning Objectives: Recognize the behavioral characteristics of Selective Mutism Become familiar with the diagnostic criteria for Selective Mutism as described in the DSM-V. Understand what Selective Mutism is not. Learn ways in which to help prepare a child with SM for treatment in the dental office. Some of these changes often have an impact on oral health. As oral health practitioners we need to arm ourselves with knowledge about these various changes to better provide our female patients with optimum care. This course will focus on the interrelationship between oral health and overall health at various stages throughout the lifecycle. Learning Objectives: Discuss the role that oral health plays in the overall health of females at various stages throughout the lifecycle. Discuss nutrient needs important to the various stages of a woman’s life. Understand the importance of various nutrients and lifestyle changes prior to conception. Recommend nutrient intake essential during pregnancy and lactation to provide adequate nutrients for proper development and growth. Recognize dental hygiene considerations for clients who are pregnant or breastfeeding. Gain a greater understanding of dietary needs during menopause and the oral sequelae that commonly occurs during this phase of the life cycle. Mallonee, MPH, RDH, RD, Received a Bachelor of Science in Dental Hygiene and a Master of Public Health with a coordinated degree in nutrition from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Prior to becoming a Registered Dietitian, Lisa practiced full time as a Registered Dental Hygienist in both general and public health practice settings. Lisa is a tenured Professor, Graduate Program Director and Registered Dietitian in the Caruth School of Dental Hygiene at Texas A&M College of Dentistry, where she currently teaches courses in public/community health and provides nutrition lectures in the dental hygiene and predoctoral dental curriculum. Additionally, she oversees practicum placement and thesis research as a co-director for postgraduate dental hygienists enrolled in the Master of Science in Education for Healthcare Professionals program housed in the Texas A&M College of Medicine. Furthermore, she serves as a preceptor for the Baylor University Medical Center Dietetic internship program. As a health care professional and educator, she is committed to two interconnected goals: sharing her knowledge, expertise, and passion while promoting the value of interprofessional collaboration among dental professionals within the wider health care community for greater patient/client outcomes. Lisa serves as a reviewer and expert content advisor on numerous publications that include: The Journal of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, Journal of the American Dental Association, the Journal of Dental Hygiene and organizations such as the National Diabetes Education Program, National Maternal & Child Oral Health Resource Center and the American Dental Educators Association (ADEA). Lisa is a published author in dental textbooks and peer reviewed journals on multiple topics pertaining to diet, nutrition and oral health and the practical application to whole body health for dietetic and dental professionals. She coauthored the Nutrition Curriculum for the revised 2015 edition of the ADEA Curriculum Guidelines for Allied Dental Education Programs. Additionally, she served as primary author for the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics Practice Paper on Oral Health and Nutrition. She is co-author on the editorial team that is continuing the legacy of Dr. Esther Wilkins’ cornerstone textbook; the 13th edition of Wilkins’ Clinical Practice of the Dental Hygienist which was recently published in January 2020. Additionally, she will serve as co-author for the 6th edition of The Dental Hygienists’ Guide to Nutritional Care scheduled for publication in 2023. She is the recipient of the 2014 Excellence in Nutrition Education of Health Professionals award; the 2016 Texas Dental Hygiene Directors’ Association/Proctor & Gamble Teaching Excellence Award and most recently she received the 2020 Texas A&M University Teaching Award for Interprofessional Excellence as well as ADEA Allied Dental Faculty Leadership Development Program Scholarship to advance academically in the area of leadership. Lisa presents educational lectures both nationally and internationally.
