pathologies. This course is an overview of oral pathologic conditions outlined according
to those affecting children/adolescents, adults and geriatric clients. It
includes both common and uncommon conditions. Many of the images and cases
presented are from Ms. Lukes’ own personal collection of lesion images
accumulated over 39 years as a dental hygienist, a 28-year teaching career and
20 years of mission work. Etiology, clinical appearance, treatment options and
relevance to dental hygiene are included for each lesion/condition. Comparison
images for inclusion in the differential diagnosis will also be presented and

Most adult patients present for dental hygiene
treatment with chronic health conditions that increase risk for systemic and
oral health complications. The presence
of multiple medical co-morbidities requires clinicians to develop a strong set
of reasoning skills to formulate dental hygiene diagnoses and appropriate care
plans to implement care safely and improve patient outcomes. Given the number of people who are living to
advanced ages with complex medical histories, dental hygienists must continue
to develop their decision-making and diagnostic skills to know when and how to
order a medical consultation, interpret pertinent laboratory data to determine
current health status, predict the need for modifications when delivering care,
and implement risk reduction strategies to improve patient safety. This course will review current best evidence
to support advanced clinical decision-making for managing today’s medically
complex patient populations. Published
clinical practice guidelines will be used to frame course content, with a
discussion of current best evidence and clinical practice standards that
support quality care, as well as recommendations for discontinuing ineffective
and/or outdated interventions. Learning Objectives: 1. Identify and interpret
critical laboratory results that are necessary to treatment plan and deliver
care safely to individuals with complex medical conditions. 2.
Discuss strategies for improving information gathering during the
medical history review. 3. Review current best evidence regarding
treatment modifications required for managing individuals with multiple medical
co-morbidities

Think Like a Periodontist: How a Dental Hygienist Should Approach Caries and Pulpal Disease
2.00
Overview:
All mechanical
dental hygiene therapy affects the tooth pulp to a certain degree. Providers must be aware of the pulpal and
periapical status of the dentition in order to prevent complications during or
after treatment. Furthermore, caries of the secondary teeth is still the most
common oral disease and diagnoses of root caries continues to increase as
people live longer and keep more of their teeth. This presentation will help guide dental
hygienists when they encounter these pathoses and provide treatment options
that can be discussed with patients.
Learning
Objectives: At
the end of this presentation, the hygienist will be able to: 1. Discuss the
differences between pulpal and periapical disease 2. Identify “red flag” teeth that should
not receive hygiene/periodontal treatment
3. Understand the options for treatment of root caries 4. Recommend evidence-based treatment for
high-risk patients.
