ce course #1-Nicotine Dependence Treatment Strategies for Oral
Health Professionals
8:30am-11:30am 3CEUs
Part 1: Every
Smoker, Every Time (ESET)
ESET training provides entry level tobacco use related
education for health care professionals. ESET includes information on effective
brief intervention, nicotine replacement therapy (NRT), and referral options. The training is approximately 1.5 hours
long. Participants receive a completion email
after passing a post-test with a score of 80% or better. The training is based on effective validated
tobacco dependence treatments and practices found in the AHRQ guidelines, Treating
Tobacco Use and Dependence: 2008 Update – Clinical Practice Guide. ESET training is part of the entry point
process for individuals to be included on the Pre-Approved Tobacco Cessation
Registry maintained by the Pennsylvania Department of Health which could be
a requirement for billing reimbursement to be identified as a Medicaid Tobacco
Cessation Counselor.
Part 2: Integrating Nicotine Dependence Treatment
with Oral Health: For Dental Professionals
The link between tobacco use and negative effects on
oral health are widely known within the oral health community. Studies indicate that advice from health care
professionals increases the chance of quitting and long-term abstinence by 30%.
Oral health care professionals see patients twice per year, presenting a unique
opportunity to speak with patients about tobacco use, advise them to quit, and
refer to appropriate resources. As of fall, 2019, these services may be billed by oral healthcare
providers although the payment model is still being finalized. However, there is a lack of awareness both in
how to perform these services and in how to bill for services. In response the Northwest Pennsylvania
Tobacco Control Program (NWPA TCP) has partnered with The Pennsylvania
Coalition of Oral Health (PCOH) to develop Integrating Nicotine Dependence
Treatment with Oral Health: For Dental Professionals; a live 1.5-hour
tobacco and nicotine education training. The training translates information
presented in ESET into the oral health setting with primary focus on providing support
and additional training in referring dental patients to cessation treatment
programming, offering tools to empower oral health professionals towards conducting
effective cessation counseling, and informing dental clinicians how to bill for
these services. Attendees will be
presented data supporting the logic behind offering cessation services as a
natural extension of oral and overall health for patients who use tobacco
products, as well as encouragement to consider systems change towards that end.
CE COURSE #2-The Oral Systemic
Connection: A Patient’s Perspective
12:30pm-1:30pm
1 CEU
A
traditional problem in medical education is the tendency to dehumanize disease
from the patient. While the
pathophysiological perspective is the current gold standard in medical education,
it does not adequately portray individuals being in the world with said
conditions. The goal of this course is
to subjectively look at four individuals living with breast cancer, drug
addiction, HIV and Sjogren’s syndrome through their words.
