Overview: Objectives: 1. To review2020 Evidence based update on Complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) in Dental and oralcare. 2. To discuss CAM group, which represent a group of diversemedical and health care systems, practices, and products that are notconsidered to be part of conventional medicine. Biofeedback, acupuncture,herbal / nutritional supplements, massage, bioelectromagnetic therapy,meditation, and music therapy are examples of CAM treatments. Some dentists inthe United States have used some of these treatments and products in theirpractices. Complementary medicines include herbal remedies, homeopathicmedicines, and essential oils. 3. To understand that there has been an increase in the use of herbalsupplements in the US over the last 15-20 years. There is a public belief thatthese medicines are safe because they are made from natural sources. However,some of these products have associated adverse effects including toxicity anddrug interactions. The health history taken by the dental professional shouldinclude questions regarding the taking of herbal and over-the-countermedications. They need to be informed regarding the herbal and over-the-counterproducts that may impact the delivery of safe and effective dental treatment.In addition, the use of CAM treatments in dentistry should be based on evidenceof effectiveness and safety as demonstrated in randomized clinical trials. 4. Todiscuss the following CAM approach for the following conditions: · Dental anxiety and gag reflex · Temporomandibular joint (TMJ) pain or TMD · Dental pain · TMJ clicking and locking · Chronic muscle pain or spasm · Atypical facial pain · Headache (migraine, tension headache) · Xerostomia (dry mouth) · Nerve pain (neuralgia, especially trigeminal neuralgia, nerve injury) · Paresthesia or anesthesia of the oral and paraoral structures. 5. Occupational Hazards in Dentistry: · Psychologicalhazards: Stress is the leading psychological condition that occurs in thedental profession. · Physicalhazards: These include musculoskeletal complications which have direct relationto dentistry procedure, like postural situations that may increase the risk oftwisting and contorting the body, varicose, etc. 6. Demonstration of Acupuncture andAcupressure technics.
