Get Real: An Insight to Your Why
3.00
Overview:
There is so much out there these days to encourage us to "leave the op" or "discover our why". Does it energize you to explore options or are you bothered at your lack of desire to "take a step" outside of your comfort zone when others around you seem to have no problem doing so? While it is true that we do need to evaluate the life choices we make and weigh our decisions of satisfaction in career, it is important to assess our natural talents and identify our weaknesses by building a lifelong career on the natural abilities and values we hold.
We are going to get down to the core of why you behave and communicate the way you do, what drains or drives your energy. Learn what is the right environment and the right culture that will compliment your personality style to improve your current working relationships.
Do not sign up for this course unless you want to get real with yourself and create a plan of success in the work place...oh-it just might make your personal life better too!
Attendees will:
1. Learn their style of communication and how to share that effectively with others 2. Gain insight to why people respond the way they do and how to meet their perceived needs 3. Receive comfortable communication confidence techniques
If you are looking for a way to improve your relationships across your organization, understand how and why others behave the way they do and achieve greater success in all your job-related endeavors, this course is one you don't want to miss.

Continuity of Care for the Dental Patient...What's Your Plan?
2.00
Overview:
Baby boomers are aging, and dentistry has become very
effective at helping them keep their natural teeth. As a result, our profession is on the brink
of an explosion. Older patients will
require more preventive and restorative dental care than previous generations.
Physical and cognitive impairments combined with transportation challenges make
appointments at traditional brick and mortar practices challenging. For these
patients who move to and reside in long term care or other care communities,
innovative approaches to maintaining oral health is critical. Solutions that
keep these patients connected to preventive care, while maintaining the
connection with their dentist will be vital to keep dental disease at bay for
these patients.
This course will discuss oral care issues facing dependent
olders, practice models and teledentistry solutions that maintain continuity of
care and education on how dental practices can incorporate these into their
practice.
Appropriate for Dentists, Hygienists and Dental Assistants
Course Objectives:
1. Recognize the oral health care challenges that are
present in the dependent older population and understand why this happens.
2. Comprehend the role teledentistry plays in keeping
patients connected with their dental home.
3. Explain how dental hygienists paired with teledentistry
solutions can improve dental health outcomes in this population
4. Understand how the new law allows dental hygienists to be
directly involved in improving dental health outside the dental office walls.
5. Describe how to implement caring for dependent olders and
teledentistry in the dental office.

Your hygiene department should be the force moving the rest of your practice forward. It's calculated that approximately 60% of the productivity in the doctor's treatment room comes from the hygiene room. Calculating how to keep the hygiene department running smoothly and efficiently will ensure the practice a healthy, long life.
And the hygiene team is more than the hygienists; it includes support from the Business Team, Restorative Clinical Team and the Dentist. In order to gain "case acceptance" from the patient and to calculate the hygiene team' effectiveness, the whole team must understand the total Hygiene Department mission and objectives.

While air polishing has been around for three decades, their use was generally restricted to supragingival stain removal. Like ultrasonics, their use with finer size particles is evolving into the next treatment modality for periodontal therapy. What do you need to know about this latest technology application and how can you incorporate it into your clinical routine?
While micro ultrasonics are now considered standard of care in periodontal therapy, what else are you using them for? What technological advances have there been since you were in school or at your last CE course? Is there really a difference between piezoelectric technology and magnetostrictive units? Are there any new inserts on the market? Is there any superior way to adapt ultrasonic instruments to the type of patient in your chair?
Participants will learn: * Biofilm's role in inflammatory disease * Implications of inadequate biofilm removal * New research and theory on air polishing subgingivally * Air polishing practical hints and tips * Indicated use on and around implants * The latest in types of ultrasonic inserts and units * Contrasts in piezoelectric/magnetostrictive technologies * Use on healthy not just perio patients * An ergonomic and "time economic" instrumentation sequence

Oral Health and Malnutrition: Opportunities for Oral and Public Health Professionals to partner with an Elder Nutrition Program to make an Impact
1.00
Overview: The Federal Older Americans Act (OAA) provides funding for services for older adults to help them remain healthy and independent. Services provided by the OAA include meals, transportation, job training and health promotion services. OAA services are primarily provided to older adults who are living at home in the community. The AA targets services to older adults who are most in need living rural areas, who are low-income or from minority populations. As of 2015, the OAA now includes provision allowing aging networks to use funds they already receive to provide oral health screenings, which encourages collaboration between OAA service providers and oral health professionals.
Each county and tribe in WI operates an Elder Nutrition Program that is funded through the OAA, state and local funds and participant contributions to provide senior dining services in the community and home-delivered meals.
Tools and resources will be shared, including oral health screening toolkits and nutrition education resources that can be used by oral and public health professionals. Presenters will also share additional examples of ways that oral health professionals and nutrition programs might collaborate to improve oral health and decrease nutritional risk.
Course objectives: 1. Learn about the purpose of the Older Americans Act and the Elder Nutrtion Program in WI 2. Learn about the educational and assessment requirements of an Elder Nutrition Program and how oral and public health professionals have a unique opportunity to impact the oral health of community-dwelling older adults
3. Learn about tools and resources available to oral and public health professionals to link oral health and nutritional health.

Designing Learning that Transforms Students to Learners
2.50
Overview:
Current research on
the science of teaching and learning is synthesized into three effective
strategies for lasting learning: THINK (encourage deep processing), SPACE
(encourage distributed, interleaved practice), and TEST (encourage retrieval
practice). Unfortunately, these principles challenge the intuitions and (in
some cases) prior learning of students about how to learn. As a result, the
most common learning strategies — rereading, highlighting, reviewing, rote
memorization, cramming, and avoiding tests at all costs - oppose lasting
learning. In this workshop, you will be learn a variety of ways to apply THINK,
SPACE, and TEST to help transform your students to learners. This workshop
complements an afternoon session by Lisa Bahr that shares how she incorporated
these learning principles into the Dental Hygiene curriculum at WCTC.
Objectives:
1.Apply deep processing strategies
(THINK) to transform students to learners.
2.Apply distributed practice
strategies (SPACE) to transform students to learners.
3.Apply retrieval practice strategies
(TEST) to transform students to learners.
4.Recognize the complexity of creating
teachable moments in light of other factors that influence learning, including
background, context, and motivation.
During this session, judges assessed Information Posters submitted by dental hygiene students enrolled in a dental hygiene program from the WI Technical College System. Nineteen teams participated and were scored and ranked with the top four teams declared as winners of the competition.
