Overview:
"Local Anesthesia-Mythbusters Edition! 6 Common Myths Explained to Make Your Local Anesthetic Techniques More Successful" 3 CEUs Presented by Dr. Jason Goodchild
COURSE
DESCRIPTION
Achieving
profound and effective local anesthesia is essential in clinical practice. It
is a limiting step in most procedures; meaning invasive procedures cannot
commence until it is successfully achieved.
Despite the
frequency that oral health providers (ie, dentists and hygienists) use local
anesthetics during clinical practice, misconceptions remain. The goal of this
presentation is to discuss several common ‘myths’ surrounding local anesthesia
while incorporating literature-supported learning issues.
Using a fun
multimedia approach, this course will review and update local anesthetic
techniques, equipment, and current research for all providers.
COURSE
OBJECTIVES
- Discuss current local anesthetic market share in the
US
- Review the basic pharmacology of local anesthetics
- Discuss common ‘myths’ associated with local
anesthesia including:
- Allergy to epinephrine
- pH and the impact on injection pain
- Does needle size make a difference?
- Does topical anesthesia actually
decrease injection pain?
- Buffering of local anesthetics
- Which local anesthetics are safe during
pregnancy and lactation?
- What is the latest on local
anesthetic-related paresthesias?
- Review the latest armamentarium of local anesthetic
delivery
- Discuss tips, tricks, and pearls to maximize local
anesthetic success

Overview: "Moving Through 2022: Current Topics in Pennsylvania Dental Public Health" 3 CEUs Presented by Helen Hawkey (PA Coalition of Oral Health)
Course Description:
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) publishes the 10 Essential Public Health Services (EPHS), which describe the public health activities that all communities should undertake. For the past 25 years, the EPHS have served as a well-recognized framework for carrying out the mission of public health. The EPHS framework was originally released in 1994 and more recently updated in 2020. Using the EPHS as a base for its work, the PA Coalition for Oral Health applies these services to dental public health across the commonwealth. Strategies that can be used to meet the challenges presented in public health settings will also be introduced in the course. Attendees will learn about the programs currently working in Pennsylvania to address the chronic disease burden in oral health. Updates will be provided on programs centered around HPV prevention, community water fluoridation, tobacco and nicotine cessation, oral health workforce, school-based programs, and more. Shareable resources and opportunities to learn more will be provided.
Course Objectives: - Identify the 10 Essential Public Health Services and the 3 core functions of public health
- Describe the planning and implementation of dental public health education strategies, interventions, and programs
- Understand current work taking place in a variety of dental public health topics, including community water fluoridation, HPV prevention, oral health workforce, policy, surveillance, and school-based programs
