We are all taught to be “reactionary” treatment planners.  We tend to watch minor problems until they become full-blown catastrophes under the pretense of being “conservative”.  Do you just “fix the tooth” or diagnose and treat what caused the problem in the first place. Many restorations are remade without diagnosing or treating the underlying pathology first.  In this lecture, Dr. Lowe will discuss an approach to diagnose and treat complete dentistry….treat the patient!  Some of the topics will include:
  1.       Complete clinical and radiographic diagnosis
  2.       Addressing the “chief complaint”.
  3.       Creating a “short-term” plan (elimination of pathology).
  4.       Creating a “long-term” plan (proper prosthetic reconstruction that addresses occlusal disparities.
  5.       Alternative treatment options and consequences of altering ideal treatment.

Learning Objectives - The attendee will learn:
  1.       The diagnostic information that is needed for every patient before treatment begins.
  2.       Occlusal examination and clinical signs that correction is recommended before definitive restorative therapy has begun.
  3.       The patient interview:  What are the patient’s goals for treatment and how to best satisfy those goals while performing quality care.  Also, discussion of pros and cons to each type of treatment.
  4.       Sequencing care to treat the whole mouth when treatment needs to be phased due to periodontal considerations, restorative considerations, economics, or all the above.
  5.       Doing more treatment in one visit rather than multiple visit tooth by tooth dentistry will increase production and at the same time perform better treatment for the patient.
