Overview

Have you ever walked down an oral hygiene aisle at the pharmacy and been overwhelmed with all the options available? Just imagine how your patient feels without any previous knowledge of what to look for to help their oral and overall health! Patients are looking to us as professionals for guidance on how to help from caries prevention to periodontal disease with the products that are currently available. This discussion will break down all the basics that are part of a patient's take-home bag- from toothpaste to interproximal aids- to help answer their questions and give proper guidance during their appointment. 


OBJECTIVES

  • Participants will discuss the active ingredients in toothpaste.
  • Participants will differentiate between active and inactive dentifrice ingredients.
  • Participants will identify the benefits and science of floss vs water flosser.
  • Participants will differentiate the benefits of other interproximal aids.
  • Participants will identify ingredients in mouthrinses and their benefits. Participants will describe toothbrush types and their benefits.
  • Participants will differentiate ingredients for Xerostomia.
  • Participants will list products for smoking cessation.

Jessica Atkinson, MEd, BSDH, RDH has 20 years of dental experience ranging from pulling charts as a sophomore in high school to brushing Filipino children's teeth after a typhoon. She has a passion for education and access to care.


Melia Lewis, MEd, BSDH, RDH grew up in the dental world. With 11 years of dental hygiene experience, 4 as a dental assistant, and hundreds of continuing education hours, she loves to learn and stay up to date on the latest technologies. She is a current adjunct faculty member at Utah Valley University and is active in the Utah Dental Hygienists’ Association. Her passion is helping dental hygienists feel empowered and supported, as well as educating the public on how awesome RDHs are to their oral and overall health.
