Overview

To err is human, to learn from our mistakes and prevent them from occurring in the future is our duty as healthcare providers.  In the complicated world of today’s healthcare, recognizing and preventing medical errors is an essential skill to ensure positive patient outcomes and minimize the cost of healthcare delivery.

This course will provide the participant with the tools to help prevent medical errors in the dental office by becoming aware of common medical errors and their root causes, recognizing susceptible populations and establishing a root cause analysis mentality.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Participants in this course will be introduced to information essential to understanding and identifying the root issues that lead to many common medical mistakes in dentistry including 
  2. Defining various types of medical errors
  3. Recognizing factors which increase medical errors
  4. Recognizing populations particularly vulnerable to medical errors
  5. Being able to implement a root cause analysis
  6. Recognizing various common medical errors seen in dentistry 
  7. Discussing strategies to reduce medical errors


Dr. Manz received his Bachelors of Science in Physics from the University of New Mexico in 1985 and graduated with honors from the University of Colorado School of Dental Medicine in 1998.  He has served as a Professor and Director of the dental hygiene program at San Juan College for the past 20 years and was in private practice as a general dentist in Vermont for 6 years prior.  He is a Veteran of the United States Navy having served as a Naval Submarine Officer and Nuclear Engineer.  He has served the New Mexico Dental Association as President and as a delegate to the ADA and currently serves as the Secretary-Treasurer.  Dr. Manz has served as a clinical and local anesthesia examiner for national licensure examinations and currently serves as a site visitor for the Commission on Dental Accreditation, as a Commissioner on the National Commission on Recognition of Dental Specialties and certifying Boards and as a spokesperson for the American Dental Association.  Dr, Manz is also a fellow of the Pierre Fauchard Academy.

He has two boys Noah and Josiah and is married to the most wonderful woman in the world, Jean.  He loves hiking and camping and working on his Toyota Landcruiser during his spare time.
