Course Description:

This course intends to provide clear information and guidance for clinicians, as they navigate trigeminal neuralgia and the new ADA specialty of orofacial pain. This complex and multifaceted field encompasses a wide range of conditions and treatments affecting the mouth, face, head, neck, and related structures. In this course, learners will gain an introduction to the dental hygienist’s role in that process of care as an interprofessional collaborative healthcare provider.

Course Objectives:

Upon successful completion of this course, attendees will:

  • List the basic symptoms of trigeminal neuralgia and chronic orofacial pain
  • Discuss the role of the dental hygienist in identifying and educating the patient on chronic orofacial pain.
  • Complete a brief assessment for patients with reoccurring pain.
  • Define the process for care referrals for patients with chronic pain.
  • InvesIgate options for the management and treatment of chronic facial pain including medicaments and complementary therapies.
