Nitrous Oxide/Oxygen Inhalation Sedation
Reducing patient anxiety and fear in the dental office should be a priority. The use of nitrous oxide/oxygen can help to provide a more pleasant dental visit experience. In order to ensure safe practices, all members of the team must feel confident during the monitoring or administering of nitrous oxide.
Whether beginning or refining your skills, this course will discuss the indications and contraindications, the biologic effect and respiratory physiology of nitrous oxide.
Objectives:
- Discuss the chemistry, pharmacology, history, and physiology of nitrous oxide-oxygen.
- Identify and explain the stages of anesthesia.
- Identify equipment associated with nitrous oxide-oxygen use.
- Discuss the advantages and disadvantages associated with nitrous oxide-oxygen sedation.
- Discuss the indications and contraindications for use of nitrous oxide-oxygen sedation.
- Discuss the uptake and distribution of gases.
- Identify safety measures associated with the nitrous oxide-oxygen unit.
- Discuss administration process of nitrous-oxide oxygen.
- Identify signs and symptoms of nitrous-oxide oxygen sedation.
- Identify equipment associated with nitrous oxide-oxygen use
Define terms: tidal volume, titration, hypoxia, baseline and oximeter
Definitions: Anxiolysis Combination inhalation-enteral sedation (combination sedation), Deep sedation, Enteral, General anesthesia, Monitor, Nitrous oxide inhalation analgesia, Administration.
Dr. Flores graduated from Lamar University in Beumont, TX with a B.S. in Biology (2001) and a B.S. in Nursing (2004). He worked as an RN in the ER, CV-ICU, behavioral health, neuro-trauma, and rehab departments in Beaumont and Houston, while concurrently attending dental school at the UT Dental Branch-Houston. He earned the Anesthesiology Safety Practice Award and the Horace Wells Award for Anesthesiology. He attended the University of Pittsburgh School of Dental Medicine, where he completed his specialty training in Dental Anesthesiology. During his chief residency year, Dr. Flores founded the first ever pre-doctoral dental anesthesia society, DACS, Dentist Anesthesiologist Club for Students. He is dual board certified in Dental Anesthesiology and was awarded Diplomate status with the American Dental Board of Anesthesiology and National Dental Board of Anesthesiology, and Fellow status with the American Dental Society of Anesthesiology. Dr. Flores completed his Masters of Healthcare Administration and currently serves as Division Chief of Dental Medicine, Clinic Director and Director of Anesthesiology for UNMMG Ambulatory Surgical Center,Professor for the AEGD residency, and Chairman of the NM Anesthesia Committee.
