Overview: CDE: 2 hours Course overview: This course will offer a review of injection landmarks and correct techniques. Instructors will share helpful suggestions for eliminating common errors and discuss how to avoid some post injection side-effects. Instructors will demonstrate proper clinical techniques through the use of various online technologies. It is the responsibility of each attendee to understand the scope of practice for delivering local anesthesia in their respective state. Course objectives: After attending this course, attendees will: 1. Identify and locate the landmarks for commonly administered local anesthetic injections . 2. Examine intricacies of injection techniques, including the IA and palatal injections. 3. Employ corrective techniques for common local anesthesia administration errors. 4. Recognize and avoid systemic complications of local anesthesia administration. 5. Recognize contraindications to local anesthesia utilization. Marie Paulis, RDH, MSDH Marie has been a dental hygienist for over 30 years and a dental hygiene educator for 20 years. Her clinical and educational experiences include general practice, periodontal practice, and public health. Currently, Marie is the Dental Hygiene Program Director at the University of New Haven and teaches the local anesthesia course and lab for students and RDH’s, Introduction to Dental Hygiene I and II, and Interprofessional Education for Health Professionals. She cochairs the Interprofessional Education Committee for the School of Health Sciences. Marie’s current research interests include the acquisition of dental hygiene and dental care for underserved populations and the benefits of interprofessional education and practice. Marie was awarded the Dean’s Award for Service (2020) and for Research (2024). Marie has presented for various professional organizations, including the American Dental Hygienists’ Association, the Commission on Dental Competency Assessments, and the American Dental Education Association. She has published in the Journal of Dental Hygiene, Access Magazine, and Dentistry IQ. She earned her certification in laser use from the Academy of Laser Dentistry in 2014. Gwen Grosso, RDH, MS Gwen has been in academia for 28 years and a practicing hygienist for 39 years. She has taught in a variety of clinical and public health settings. She teaches at both the associate and baccalaureate levels at the University of New Haven. She currently teaches Pharmacology and Pain Management, Periodontology, Local Anesthesia Laboratory, and Principles of Communication for Health Professionals. She has developed a course in accordance with the Connecticut Dental Hygiene Practice Act, to educate registered dental hygienists in the certification of Local Anesthesia. Her professional speaking engagements included invitations from Old Dominion University and the University of Maryland to present the Local Anesthesia certification course to faculty. Overview: CDE: 2 hours Course overview: Dentists and hygienists are in a unique position to help the team identify the muscular dysfunctions that usually accompany temporomandibular joint dysfunction (TMD). TMD can result from a variety of issues from musculature imbalance, malocclusion, and other traumatic events. Along with these commonly known factors postural imbalances and airway restriction can also impact the TMJ. This course explores different treatment options including traditional and newer techniques, as well as understanding a team approach to care. This lecture will include demonstrations of simple myofascial releases patients can do, discussion of therapy techniques, diet, and myofunctional therapy. We will explore the use of CBD oils and low-level light therapy for inflammation reduction and analgesia. Course objectives: Upon completion, participants will be able to: 1. Identify the TMJ joint anatomy 2. Describe common TMD muscle pain referral patterns 3. Recognize additional methods of pain reduction that complement dental interventions. 4. Patient centered simplified myofascial release techniques and muscle movements. 5. Recommend general dietary guidelines to help healing and collagen production Patricia Brinkman-Falter, BSDH, MS, PHRDH, COM Pat obtained her Bachelor of Science degree in Dental Hygiene at the University of Nebraska Medical Center and has been a practicing dental hygienist for over 35 years. She also holds a Public Health License in Dental Hygiene. Pat completed her Masters in Human Resource and Family Science at UNL and obtained her Gerontology certification at Colorado State. She then obtained her Orofacial Myofunctional educational training at the Academy of Orofacial Myology in Los Angeles, California and completed her Internship at Billings Speech Pathology Services in Lee’s Summit, Missouri. She has also received advance training at Midwest Orofacial Myology in Chicago, IL and is certified in parafunctional behavior modification. Pat is a Board Certified Orofacial Myologist (COM) through the International Association of Orofacial Myology (IAOM). She currently serves on the IAOM Examiners Board, and is a past president of the UNMC College of Dentistry Alumni Council. She is a Past President of the Nebraska Dental Hygienists\' Association and won the Irene Newman Award through ADHA for advancing the field of dental hygiene. She was published in ADHA’s Access Journal in 2020 on recognizing Myofunctional Disorders and received the IAOM Rose Van Normal Award for her work in updating ADHAs policies on the practice of myofunctional therapy by hygienists. She is a Nebraska and AGD approved provider of continuing education for Orofacial Myology and lectures at dental and medical schools and professional meetings. Her years of experience with digit sucking, oromotor dysfunctions, TMJD and other areas of Orofacial Myofunctional Disorders have been hugely successful. Pat’s dedicated experience and perceptive insights allow her patients to achieve overall confidence by providing an individualized, positive treatment plan. Pat has practiced Orofacial Myology since 2008 in Central and Eastern Nebraska. She and her husband have seven children and ten grandchildren. Overview: CDE: 2 hours Course Overview: The purpose of this presentation is to provide the dental professional with knowledge to appreciate and understand the sedation complications and emergencies that can occur in the dental office. The presentation will also illustrate regional influences with New Mexico as an example. Furthermore, this course will provide foundational concepts to help develop the participants evaluation and judgement in managing in-office sedation complications and emergencies. Course Objectives: To give dental providers an understanding of the circumstances surrounding common in-office sedation complications and emergencies. To encourage discussion and examination of common in-office sedation complications and emergencies. To help dental providers begin to develop critical-thinking emergency skills. Dr. Flores graduated from Lamar Univ. in Beaumont, TX, with a B.S. in Biology (2001) and a B.S. in Nursing (2004). He worked as an RN in the ER, CV-ICU, behavioral health, neuro-trauma, and rehab departments in Beaumont and Houston, while concurrently attending dental school at the UT Dental Branch-Houston. He earned the Anesthesiology Safety Practice Award and the Horace Wells Award for Anesthesiology. He attended the Univ. of Pittsburgh School of Dental Medicine, where he completed his specialty training in Dental Anesthesiology. During his chief residency year, Dr. Flores founded the first ever pre-doctoral dental anesthesia society, DACS, Dentist Anesthesiologist Club for Students. He is dual board certified in Dental Anesthesiology and was awarded Diplomate status with the American Dental Board of Anesthesiology and National Dental Board of Anesthesiology and Fellow status with the American Dental Society of Anesthesiology. Dr. Flores completed his Masters of Healthcare Administration and currently serves as Division Chief of Dental Medicine, Clinic Director and Director of Anesthesiology for UNMMG Ambulatory Surgical Center, Professor for the AEGD residency, and Chairman of the NM Anesthesia Committee. OSHA is the law and enforces guidelines set on both state and federal levels. OSHA requires specific safety features and written policies that must exist in the dental practice to identify risk, minimize injury, and protect providers against blood borne pathogens. Providers must continue to enhance their understanding of the risk of blood borne pathogens and disease transmission. This presentation promotes an understanding on how to identify potential risk, utilize protective precautions, and implement policies that promote a safe and healthy work environment.
