Overview

This lecture provides a brief overview of neuropathic pain syndromes affecting the head and face, with a focus on distinguishing among neuropathies, neuralgia, and neuritis. Participants will gain a foundational understanding of the diagnostic classifications, clinical presentations, and management strategies for these complex conditions. Emphasis will be placed on common and clinically significant disorders such as trigeminal neuralgia, post traumatic trigeminal neuropathic pain and burning mouth syndrome. The session will also briefly cover pharmacotherapeutic management of these difficult to treat disorders.

Learning Objectives

By the end of this lecture, participants will be able to:

1) Differentiate between neuropathies, neuralgia, and neuritis based on clinical presentation, pathophysiology, and diagnostic findings.

2) Identify key features and diagnostic criteria of common craniofacial neuropathic pain syndromes, including trigeminal neuralgia, post traumatic trigeminal neuropathic pain and burning mouth syndrome.

3) Formulate evidence-based treatment plans, including pharmacologic and interventional strategies, tailored to specific neuropathic pain conditions of the head and face.
