Course Description: The use of radiography for medical diagnosis is a key component to the oral health professional. Although the dental practice exposes patients to some of the lowest amounts of medical radiation, it is important to stay current on the safety and best practices to protect the patient and the provider. This course will review the science and safety of radiology in accordance to the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection. This course will also provide you with the most current policies and procedures of radiation exposure and practice, and proper disclaimer information to post in the healthcare setting.

Upon completion of this course, participants will:

• Understand radiation science

• Review X-ray imaging techniques and safe practices

• Know how to properly maintain a quality assurance (QA) program, safety plans, and documentation

• Review regulations and policies per the guidelines set by the PA DEP

 

Speaker: Laura Crawford, RDH, MHS, PHDHP

Laura Crawford is an enthusiastic and passionate dental hygienist residing in central Pennsylvania. As an active member of the Pennsylvania Dental Hygienists' Association, Laura is currently serving as a Northwest Component Trustee, Continuing Education Co-Chair for Sector 2 & 3, and the PDHA Membership Chair. She practices chair side for Dr. Eddie Kotary, DMD, and Dr. April Detar, DMD in State College, PA. Laura is also a clinic instructor in the Dental Hygiene program at Pennsylvania College of Technology. She has experience practicing chair side in multiple healthcare settings including, public schools, private practice, community clinic, and community volunteering events. She has also coordinated and implemented dental health fairs in Managua, Nicaragua on two separate occasions.

*PDHA is an approved CE provider with DEP and this course satisfies their continuing education requirement..
