Overview: The dental hygiene profession is one that has truly evolved since Irene Newman’s 1914 introduction in to the industry. Lovingly termed ‘the tooth scraper', dental hygienists have worked tirelessly to spearhead pivots in the implementation of dental hygiene therapy in the 21st century. With these pivots came new clinical paradigm shifts, increased diversity within the profession, governmental oral health initiatives, unique advocacy challenges, worldwide health crises and most critically, advanced evidence-based research calling upon the dental hygiene community to persevere.
Nevertheless, the cadence of ‘you’re due for your 6-month cleaning’ and the perception that we are ‘just’ a dental hygienist has contributed to slowing the progression of the new wave of dental hygiene. Put simply: dental hygienists are, have always and will continue to serve as more than a ‘tooth scraper’, and it is critical that we appreciate the educated, diverse and empathetic professionals society requires of us.
Join periodontal hygienist Katrina Sanders with Procter & Gamble as they celebrate National Dental Hygiene Month, discussing the incredible movement the profession has observed in over 100 years of service to the community. Let’s celebrate where we were, where we are, and most critically, where we are going… together.
Objectives:
- Review the foundational history of the dental hygiene profession across the United States
- Discuss societal and clinical paradigm shifts impacting the trajectory of the dental hygiene profession
- Explore futuristic trends in research and career paths leading to monumental pivots for dental hygienists
