Course Overview
“Why do I feel this way about someone? What am I being reminded of?”
Have you ever walked out to greet a new patient and felt something without understanding where that feeling came
from? Everyone brings their history of experiences with them wherever they go. These experiences can lead to
biases that may affect how we treat others, including our patients. This course will explore implicit bias, also known as unconscious bias, and its role in the delivery of dental healthcare. This course will also include a pre- and post- course assessment to gauge learners changes in attitudes. Through case study reviews, pre- and post- assessments, and practical strategies, this course aims to help dental professionals acquire the knowledge and tools needed to understand and address biases, promoting equitable care for patients.
Learning Objectives
• Define implicit bias and how it is different from explicit bias
• Identify how implicit bias can influence interactions, treatment planning, and health outcomes
• Recognize the presence of implicit bias in dental healthcare settings and its effect on equitable access to dental healthcare
• Explore the impact that implicit bias has on patient outcomes and access to dental care
• Discuss strategies to mitigate bias and promote equitable treatment in the dental practice
