Overview: This course provides an overview of culturally competent care and is designed to enhance understanding and engagement with the Hispanic and Latin community. The course aims to equip participants with the knowledge, skills, and attitudes necessary to develop meaningful and respectful interactions with individuals from diverse Hispanic and Latin backgrounds.
This course begins by exploring the rich cultural heritage and history of the Hispanic and Latin community, encompassing their diverse origins, languages, traditions, and how that contributes to their decision making. Participants will gain insights into the factors influencing Hispanic and Latin identity, including intersectionality, acculturation, and the complexities of biculturalism.
The course addresses the importance of language and communication with the Hispanic and Latin community. It explores the linguistic diversity among Hispanic and Latin individuals, emphasizing the significance of bilingualism and the role of language as a vehicle for cultural preservation and identity. Practical language strategies and resources will be provided to facilitate effective communication. Participants will also explore existing community organizations, networks, and initiatives that provide support in dentistry for Hispanic and Latin populations.
Objectives:
- The learner will be able to identify barriers to dental care in the Hispanic and Latin communities.
- The learner will be able to modify their care to increase comfortability among Hispanic and Latin patients
- The learner will be able to incorporate culturally appropriate language into their care.
Amber Lovatos, RDH, BSDH, has been compassionately blazing trails personally and professionally for more than 10 years. As a clinician, educator, author, and champion for public health issues, she inspires industry colleagues with unique stories that include triumph over abuse and discovering her identity as “The Latina RDH.” Celebrated as her family’s first college graduate, Amber holds a bachelor’s degree in dental hygiene from The University of Texas School of Dentistry. Amber is recipient of numerous national and state awards and academic scholarships including being named 2021’s Dimensions of Dental Hygiene Six Dental Hygienists You Want to Know & 2022 Sunstar Award of Distinction recipient. Amber is also 2023’s TIME Magazines’ TIME 101. Amber is the co-author of Smiles Por Vida a Spanish & Spanglish not for profit children’s dental book. A powerful speaker and advocate, Amber empowers clinicians through presentations of perseverance and resilience.
