Overview: Course description: According to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), COVID-19 cases and hospitalizations were at the highest in January 2022. There were over 77,000,000 COVID-19 cases reported in the United States as of February 9, 2022. Dental hygienists have faced many challenges in providing treatment in a safe manner while minimizing risk of transmission. The past interim infection control guidelines of avoiding aerosol producing procedures forced dental hygienist to go back to the basics of hand instrumentation. Although powered instruments are known to reduce clinician trauma disorders and are mainstream in periodontal therapy, the use of hand instrumentation became vital to patient care. The basic foundation to hand instrumentation lies in proper technique and ergonomics. Learning Objectives Define ergonomics and discuss how its principals are helpful in the practice of dental hygiene. Name the four ergonomic hazards for dental hygienists. Discuss and demonstrate the elements of neutral seated posture for the clinician Define clinical attachment. Identify the parts of a periodontal instrument and the purpose of the parts of a periodontal instrument. Identify the leading, middle and heal third of the working end of a periodontal instrument. Demonstrate the modified pen grasp using precise finger placement on the instrument. Describe the function of each finger in the modified pen grasp. Recognize incorrect finger placement in the modified pen grasp and describe how to correct the problem(s). Demonstrate correct finger rests using precise finger placement on the handle of a periodontal instrument while instrumenting anterior teeth. This course discusses the impact of Nano Technology on today’s preventative and restorative materials. Attendees will have a “hands-on forum” to provide their dental teams with new skills on today’s desensitizers, sealants, and fluoride treatments to combat patient’s current symptoms and prevention of future issues. Gain an understanding of new research findings that can contribute to the evidence for application of varnish with chemotherapeutic fluoride treatment. Understand the findings of recent research exploring how dental practitioners are using scientific evidence in their patient treatment decisions and patient counseling. Learn methods of applying Xylitol containing fluoride treatments and Nano Hybrid sealants and their effectiveness on today’s patients. Overview: Course description: provide an update on drug misuse for dental professionals. It will cover the history, extent and costs for drug use and misuse in the U.S., the impact of drug use on particular populations, the physical, neurological, psychological and environmental effects, prevailing theories surrounding chemical addiction and dental and dental hygiene considerations for providing care. Special emphasis will be placed on oral soft and hard tissue outcomes Learning Objectives Understand the history of drug use and abuse in the United States. Describe the current theories of chemical dependency as a brain disease. Describe the physical, neurological, and psychological characteristics associated with substance use disorders (SUD). Identify the most common CNS stimulants (uppers), CNS depressants (downers) and other synthetics (all arounders) including vaping and describe their characteristics. Review and consider URL scenarios of substance abuse disorder. Provide a list and discuss the common systemic and oral health risks of drug misuse. Discuss the best practices for pain management to include recommendations for safe prescription writing Identify and discuss important dental and dental hygiene considerations in the management of chemically dependent patients.
