Objectives

  •        Review opioid prescription trends after dental procedures
  •        Identify alternative strategies to lessen or obviate the need for opioid prescribing after procedures
  •        The risks and identification of opioid use disorder
  •        Incorporate regulations and guidelines regarding opioid use for managing acute pain
  •        Discuss recommendations for safe, responsible use of prescription opioid analgesics
  •        Strategies for patient/family communication


Angela Rake, DDS, has been an oral maxillofacial surgeon at Dakota Valley Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery since 2002. She also serves as an Adjunct Associate Professor in the Division of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis.


Dr. Rake is both a Diplomate with the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons as well as an active leader and spokesperson in her field.
 
She is a past president of the Minnesota Society of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, a member of the Clinical Governance Board with U.S. Oral Surgery Management, a NIH-NIDAMED Contracted Panelist, an appointed member as well as a twice-elected President of the Minnesota Board of Dentistry, and a member of the American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons, the American Dental Society of Anesthesiology, the American Dental Association, the Minnesota Dental Association, and the Minneapolis District Dental Society.

Dr. Rake completed her Doctor of Dental Surgery degree and advanced training in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at the University of Minnesota where she also earned The School of Dentistry Distinguished Dental Alumni Award.

In addition to her surgical practice and teaching work, Dr. Rake has presented on numerous dental surgery topics, both on regional and national stages. She has also gained attention for her advocacy of safe and responsible office-based anesthesia, safe opioid prescribing, and the prevention of substance use disorders.
