Knowledge is Power-Utilizing Instrumentation Function and Design to Maximize Scaling Efficiency
4.00
Overview:
If every single action you made during instrumentation
resulted in the greatest benefit possible in the most efficient manner, how
would it change the quality of your work, treatment outcomes for your patient
and the value of your practice [McSpadden]? The evolution of the technology and
innovation behind hand instruments is constantly being introduced. The design concepts
for many new instruments are significant departures from previous designs. To
appreciate new design principles for advanced developments, it is necessary to
determine the considerations by which all hand instruments should be used. This
interactive presentation offers those considerations. Attendees will gain an
understanding of new design concepts that replace repetitious, unnecessary and
counterproductive actions with only the most effective actions to achieve
clinical excellence.

Nitrous oxide was first used in Dentistry in 1844, yet clinicians often have problems using it consistently to reduce anxiety in their patients. Many of those challenges can be alleviated by understanding more about how the equipment is designed to operate. Mastering the use of Nitrous Oxide and Oxygen for anxiolysis (mild sedation) can be broken down into primarily 3 categories. 1-Basic Nitrous-Covering the simple details of Nitrous Oxide and Oxygen makes sure we are all on the same page. "I know this already. Let's get to the good stuff!" 2-Technical Nitrous-Understanding the way nitrous equipment is designed and how it affects the outcome. "What do I do when the patient doesn't feel the effects?" 3-Clinical Nitrous-Recommendations on using the least amount of nitrous to produce the optimal effect. "What can I do to make this the best experience for my patients?"

The Impact of Implicit Bias in Healthcare The human brain
can process 11 million bits of information every second, but our conscious mind
can only handle 40-50 pieces of that information, making us 99% unconscious in
our thinking [NPR]. What does that mean. We are all biased. This statement
“everyone has biases” often makes people feel attacked, but the good news is by
acknowledging biases, they can be changed over time with intention and
training. In healthcare, implicit bias can lead to unequal access to care,
unequal treatment of patients, and unequal treatment outcomes for certain
groups of patients. Implicit bias can also have a significant impact on
diversity and inclusion efforts. It is important to be aware of the potential
for implicit bias to influence decisions in the dental profession and to take
steps to mitigate its effects. Organizations can reduce the impact of implicit
bias by creating a more diverse and inclusive workplace, implementing
unconscious bias training, and encouraging open dialogue about diversity and
inclusion.
Define implicit bias and the connection with the human brain
Explain the most common forms of biases
Recognize the impact of implicit bias on diversity and inclusion efforts

When we enter a restaurant, many of us
look for the ‘grade’ they received for food safety. When someone becomes a
barista for the first time, they go through a food safety course to ensure
someone doesn’t become ill because of improper handling. Are we ensuring each
team member can care for patients without causing an infection control breach?
If a patient asked our ‘grade’ for infection prevention, what would it be? Or,
if an auditor from the dental board were to walk into your facility right now,
what grade would they put on the door when they left? In this course, we will
look at the CDC inspection checklist and review the basics of infection
prevention in the dental setting.

The New Role of Dental Hygienists – Same time Dynamic Results
2.00
Overview:
New findings, new diagnostic efforts, and new conversations with patients doesn't have to put the dental hygiene schedule on super stress. What we know
today about our role in breathing sounds complicated and time-consuming. It doesn't have to be. It also sounds as if hygienists who spend their time on breathing, have no chance of bonusing. There are ways to support all dental hygiene practices, the bottom line of the dental practice, AND the systemic health of each patient.
In this energetic course, Dr. Geivelis and Shirley Gutkowski explore how to take the current diagnostic tools and processes to the next level giving new
information that can impact health on many levels.
This course is designed for the dental team, and appropriate for dentists too.
Learning objectives 1. Construct a system that will identify airway issues in your patients 2. Confidently predict low tongue posture from anatomical conditions of the mouth 3. Prioritize breathing in your patients with dental decay or periodontal infections
4. Learn about proper Tongue-Tie release and optimal timing for better outcomes

Dental hygiene patients who do not have access to dental
care or need to delay their care may resort to home remedies to alleviate mouth
pain or discomfort. Having a relationship with an oral health provider might
make the difference between choosing safe and effective pain management
strategies or choosing risky pain management strategies that may cause
additional pain or discomfort.
Data from a national survey suggests that Americans who do not routinely seek care from an oral
health provider may be more likely to turn to home remedies that may or may not
be effective for managing pain and discomfort related to toothaches, cracked or
broken teeth, swollen or bleeding gums, or other oral health issues. This
course will also review home remedies recommended in social media and how that
can affect patient health.
Learning Outcome #1: Understand the difference
between safe and dangerous home remedies for dental pain or discomfort.
Learning Outcome #2:
Discuss the relationship between overall health and oral health
symptoms.
Learning Outcome #3:
Create protocols related to patient guidance with home remedy
utilization.

Oral hygiene home care: What are patients really doing?
1.00
Overview:
Oral hygiene practices and other lifestyle behaviors, such as food and beverage habits and tobacco use, are important to consider when identifying oral health risks for
individuals. Demographic differences, along with insurance type, are additional variables that must be considered. Identifying
these risks can help provide individualized oral health education based on person-centered
care. Person-centered dental care ensures that the patient’s needs,
values, beliefs, and oral health literacy are incorporated into proposed dental
interventions. The goal of providing person-centered care is healthier patient
behaviors and better oral health outcomes. Oral hygiene home care is an
important part of maintaining oral health, but it is a small part of a
patient’s overall lifestyle. Dental hygienists are the oral health specialists
that can help identify the multiple factors contributing to a patient’s oral
disease.
Learning Outcome #1: Understand the frequency and
prevalence of brushing and flossing habits among various demographics such as
age, gender, and race.
Learning Outcome #2:
Discuss the relationship between overall health and oral hygiene home
care habits.
Learning Outcome #3:
Recognized the relationship between oral hygiene home care habits and
other risk factors for oral disease.
