One of the hundreds of active substances in cannabis, cannabidiol, better known as CBD,
has gained widespread popularity despite the lack of robust evidence supporting its
therapeutic effects beyond the only currently federally approved cannabidiol-based drug,
Epidiolex®.
The same active ingredient in this premier, plant-based cannabidiol drug should not
legitimize the claims of the plethora of OTC CBD products purporting various therapeutic
benefits. From foot creams, to toothpaste, to pet products, statements of benefit have not
been scientifically evaluated by the FDA, which may be confusing to consumers and health
care professionals. Further complicating the issue, is the nearly ubiquitous availability of
medical cannabis preparations in state-approved dispensaries and the growing availability of
recreational marijuana.
This presentation will assist dental professionals in distinguishing the differences between
the valid scientific evidence, which is abundant, and unproven assertions of the growing
cannabis industry. The science behind the therapeutic and adverse actions of the main
cannabinoids, including CBD and THC, will help participants in understanding their
approved and investigational medical and oral/dental applications, effects on safe and ethical
dental treatment, as well as in becoming more aware and educated consumers.
Course objectives:
• Review the trends and growing acceptance of cannabis-based products and effect of legislative status on their use;
• Evaluate the science behind the mechanism of action, therapeutic and adverse effects of cannabinoid-based drugs in management of various conditions;
• Discuss evidence of effectiveness of FDA-approved cannabis drugs and state allowed medical cannabis formulations;
• Examine the over-the-counter CBD-containing products, their safety and effectiveness;
• Discuss the implications of recreational cannabis, where approved, including dental treatment considerations.
