Overview: CDE 2 hours Overview: Sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) and sexually transmitted infections (STIs) are among the most common communicable diseases in the United States. Incidence of chlamydia, gonorrhea, and syphilis is on the rise, particularly among people of diverse race/ethnicity. Multiple studies demonstrate that education surrounding the signs, symptoms, and treatment of STIs and STDs is greatly lacking in the United States. It is important that dental professionals not shy away STDs and STIs in practice as their signs and symptoms frequently manifest in the oral cavity. This course will serve to educate attendees about the oral signs and symptoms of STDs/STI’s, propose ideas for having difficult but necessary conversations about STIs/STDs with patients/clients, and introduce them to resources we created through our public health/oral health collaborative.
Learning objectives: Upon completion of the course, the attendees will: 1. Recall trends in the incidence and prevalence rates of STDs/STIs in the United States. 2. Analyze oral lesions for potential association with STDs/STIs. 3. Employ interprofessional collaboration and practice. 4. Identify cultural beliefs and stigma surrounding STDs/STIs. 5. List culturally appropriate strategies for discussing STDs/STIs with patients. 6. Identify mechanisms of referral for patients suffering from STDs/STIs. 7. Discuss the payment structure and relevant CDT Codes.
