Overview: *Course #1: “Local Anesthesia Update and Review for Dental Hygienists” 3.0 CEUs* *Your registration includes both courses and lunch* Course Description: This course is offered to dental hygienists to update their knowledge of local anesthesia safety and efficacy. Indications of different formulations of local anesthetics will be reviewed, including recommendations of safe doses. Additional topics include buffering of local anesthetics, non-injectable agents for clinical use, computer delivery of local anesthetics, and indications for alternative techniques in both maxillary and mandibular anesthesia. This three-hour presentation is applicable for renewal of a dental hygienist's Local Anesthesia License in Pennsylvania. Course Objectives: Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to: Relate pre-treatment assessment to considerations for choice of anesthetic, technique, and relative and absolute contraindications for anesthetics/vasoconstrictors; Calculate and record doses of local anesthetic administered and determine maximum recommended doses; Explain advantages and disadvantages of both injectable and topical anesthesia; Assess innovative approaches in local anesthesia; Describe necessary landmarks and technique for delivery of the standard inferior alveolar nerve block, posterior superior alveolar nerve, anterior middle superior alveolar nerve, and the Gow Gates technique; Discuss complications related to failure of local anesthesia and identify alternatives that allow for safe and effective delivery techniques. Speaker: Victoria G. Green, RDH, MEd, MPH Victoria Green is the Assistant Program Director of the University of Pittsburgh School of Dental Medicine Dental Hygiene Program. She is course director of Local Anesthesia for the Dental Hygienist among other courses. She is a 2010 graduate of Pitt Dental Hygiene. In 2015 she earned her Master's in Higher Education Management from the University of Pittsburgh and in 2020 she earned her Master's in Public Health with Dental Emphasis from A.T. Still University. Miss Green has worked in dental and dental hygiene education since 2011. Miss Green recently completed a project with the Pitt Dental Medicine Public Health Department to create the education program for the FDA's pain management in Emergency Medicine protocol. Miss Green has a passion for expanding the accessibility of higher education and creating richer opportunities for students to learn. Her hobbies include distance running and reading widely. Overview: Course #2: “*Silver Diamine Fluoride: A Valuable Way to Manage Decay*” 2.0 CEUs Your registration includes both courses and lunch Course Description: Silver Diamine Fluoride is a medicament approved for use in the United States to treat sensitivity and to arrest the progression of dental caries. This continuing education course for dental professionals, “Silver Diamine Fluoride: A Valuable Way to Manage Decay,” provides an introduction of Silver Diamine Fluoride (SDF) and its use in dentistry. This course will provide an overview of the history of SDF in dentistry, and when it came to be available for use in the United States. The mechanism of action of SDF will be discussed as well as indications and contraindications for use. This presentation will outline information on proper protocol for proper application of SDF, discuss drawbacks associated with SDF use and give suggestions for patient education and acceptance of treatment with SDF. In addition, this course will explore how PHDHPs can incorporate silver diamine fluoride when providing care in our communities. Course Objectives: Upon completion of this course participants will be able to: Define/Describe Silver Diamine Fluoride List indications for use of SDF in dentistry Explain protocol for SDF Application Identify populations that can benefit from SDF use List contraindications and cautions for SDF use Discuss challenges to SDF implementation in practice Describe how to obtain and use SDF in practice as a PHDHP Speaker: Bridget Motel, MEd., RDH, PHDHP* Bridget Motel is an accomplished educator and healthcare professional, currently serving as an Assistant Professor at The Pennsylvania College of Technology.
