Drug abuse is at an epidemic level with approximately 1 out of every 10 Americans addicted to illegal and prescribed stimulants, depressants, and opioids. As dental professionals, we must awaken to the uncomfortable reality that many of our patients have substance-use disorders and learn safe, effective, and realistic diagnostic, communication and treatment strategies. Educational Objectives: Participants will Learn: • To identify the prescription and illicit drugs that patients are most likely to abuse (depressants, stimulants, and opioids) • To recognize the physical, behavioral, and oral clues associated with depressant, stimulant and opioid abuse during a routine dental examination • To discuss substance abuse with patients comfortably and competently • Evidence-based practices for managing dental pain without using analgesics with addictive potential • How to avoid being targeted for drugs by your patients • To develop treatment plans based upon caries-risk assessment by drug-use patterns. *Note: Course content does not include marijuana
